Deceptively Delcious /The Sneaky Chef
Anyone use either of these cookbooks.
How are the recipes in real life?
I bought DD today and it looks like a GREAT idea, the recipes look yummy, but the Amazon reviews are awful.
Curious about real results.

I've tried a couple of the main courses and they're pretty good although some of them required a little tweaking to make it tastier. So far the deserts though have been awful. Haven't tried any of the breakfast foods yet.

I loved reading it, and was thinking this is too good to be true, so I looked online and found the reviews to be the same, Im hoping to hear some success stories....

I have both of them.

I just got Deceptively Delicious for Christmas. Haven't made anything yet though. I am headed to the supermarket tomorrow and will stock up on some items and give a few recipes a try.

Re: Deceptively Delcious /The Sneaky Chef
I just got Deceptively Delicious and spent 6 hours making all the purees on Sunday. I bagged and tagged them and froze them all so they are ready for when I attempt to make one of the dishes. My first recipe I think will be the mac and cheese. I am probably going to make it tonight. I'll let you know how it goes!

Re: Deceptively Delcious /The Sneaky Chef
I have Deceptively delicious.
So far i have made the sweet potato pancakes, which were a little sticky but I thought they were yummy, dd hated them.
I also made the peanut butter banana muffins with cauliflower. They were pretty gross, but dd LOVED them, kept calling them cupcakes and eating them like they were going out of style. There is also an option to make them with carrot instead, I think I want to try that.

Re: Deceptively Delcious /The Sneaky Chef
I already put purees in food, so I thought DD would be good to figure out how to do more. One thing that I thought she did better than me is matching the colors.
I almost always put spinach in things - but it would make the mac n cheese a bit dingy looking - not bad enough that DS wouldn't eat it though. Next time I will try squash.
I have also done a variation of her mashed caulifower. I found the recipe when trying SOuth Beach and it is quite good and DS thinks it's mashed potatoes
I feel a little bad about lying.
What I would like to figure out is how to get a veggie puree into a dip. Maybe not a puree, but chop the veggie super super fine?

Re: Deceptively Delcious /The Sneaky Chef
I have the book and tried a few things..they were ok.
So - I sort of figured out how to do it on my own. I either make purees or just buy organic baby food and I just put purees in anything I can think of.
For example... For dinner I made scrambled eggs with corn/sweet potato puree and cheese in it. (You can also use cauliflower, squash, anything that is similar in color).
When I make make and cheese I usually buy the annies organic microwavable ones. I mix the cheese powder with baby food carrots before I add it to the pasta.
I make whole wheat pancakes with mashed up banana.
I add broccoli puree to spaghetti sauce.
You can even add carrot baby food to ketchup or anything your kids dip into.
I try to add it whenever I can...there, I just saved you $25 bucks

Re: Deceptively Delcious /The Sneaky Chef
Ive mixed food into things on my own as well. like baby jars of carrots and sweet potatoes into meatball mix, etc.
But for some reason, Im not totally into the idea of this book because I want to teach my boys to eat the vegetables themselves. learn what they are, why they are good for them, take some when they see it at a restaurant, etc.
Its not teaching them anything about the vegetables... Im giving them a veggie or two every nite, as is. I tell them what vegetable it is if its something new, or we talk about what vegetable it is, why its good for us, etc.
I always mix spinach into my chopped meat, and they both love that. carrots into the soups they love. broccoli, tomatoes, string beans, etc.
they LOVE LOVE bananas, apples, and many other fruits.
I dont mind still hiding some here and there, but to make a trend of it for a long time, doesnt make sense to me.

Agreed. But I still serve a veggie with every meal and try and get her to eat it.

I agree...but let me tell ya...it gets harder as they get older. They get more and more picky. AS babies, my kids ate EVERYTHING!! Now, to feed them a pea or a string bean, my almost 6 year old thinks it's poison.
So...a mom's gotta do what a mom's gotta do to get the veggies in. So deception it is!

Re: Deceptively Delcious /The Sneaky Chef
I wanted to get these cookbooks. Are you guys trying these receipes because your DC won't eat fruits and veggies? I'm just curious because I'm very lucky that my DD will eat any fruit or veggie I give her so I'm not sure I'd need to use such a book.

How old is dd again? My dd used to eat everything too. She still eats fruit but veggies are tough. She went through a phase at about 13 or 14 months when all she would eat was green veggies. Now it is harder to get her to eat them.
Anyway, to answer your question, if my dd ate the veggies whole all the time I wouldn't bother with this book.

If you look at the most recent nutrition recommendations, I doubt any of our children (or even the adults ) are meeting the # of daily servings for fruits and veggies. My kids love fruits and most veggies...and let's be honest, I can put carrot sticks in my son's lunch box, but I'm not there to make sure he EATS them, rather than throwing them away...so, even if he likes them, he might not be getting that serving into his body.
I don't think these books are advocating that you always hide the veggies as opposed to presenting them as healthy food options. In fact, Jessica Seinfeld's book states that she will often set out a platter of raw veggies for the kids to "snack" on while she's cooking...and that veggies are still offered as "side dishes" to the main course. So, I think sneaking the puree into a recipe here and there is merely a way to guarantee that everyone seated at that dinner table will get some extra servings of natural vitamins and fiber. Nothing wrong w/that, in my book.

yep, I agree with doing what we gotta, trust me I have one of THE most finicky eaters on the planet ! he will stare at the food on his plate, and be annoyed that different things are touching eachother and what is this and what is that.
my MIL made my hubby "milkshakes" for many years with lots of veggies so this hiding of veggies is nothing new I guess !
