Dear DH

Each year, you rush out of the house on Mother’s Day to get me flowers. You make up a lame excuse & I know that you’re scrambling around this morning looking for overpriced plants for me. You know the day is coming & yet every year it’s the same thing. What I haven’t told you is that you already gave me a gift. You gave me the two most precious gifts I could ever ask for – and for the past 365 days not one day has gone by that I haven’t cherished them. Each day of my life is a gift because of you.

I can’t stop thinking about the people who hate this holiday and the people tha fear this holiday. The people, whether by death or estrangement are without their moms. This holiday pains them like no other day. I think about your sister who is petrified to celebrate her pregnancy this Mother’s Day and tries to remains optimistic that next Mother’s Day she’ll be celebrating as a mom. I see the moms that are terrified this Mother’s Day will be their last. I think of my friend from kindergarten who is spending her Mother’s Day at Sloane, holding Alec’s hand while he undergoes chemo. I think of your sister who didn’t know that last year was her last Mother’s Day on Earth. I think of the other moms too - the ones that abandoned their families, the ones that poisoned their children against their ex-husbands, the ones that are overbearing grandparents that are making their daughters neurotic messes.

The expression it takes a village to raise a child isn’t a hokey campaign slogan. I see Mother’s Day as a day to cherish those around you who helped you grow. Every single one of these women have taught me something and mothered me in some way. As if feeling the love for my children wasn’t enough, they have taught me that I have had the gift of time. Time with a mom that I adore, time (and timeouts) with the kids, time alone with you and time alone with me. They’ve shown me the type of mom I want to be, and more importantly the type of mom I don’t want to be.

So once again, because you think “that’s the way Mother’s Day should be celebrated”, I’ll let you go shopping for the plants, knowing that at least $100 will be coming out of our checking account for plants that will more than likely not be around next year because I will surely forget to water them. While you are out, I’ll be snuggled in bed with children that will be hogging the covers and wake up to find myself surrounded my stuffed animals. Maybe I’ll even get out of bed and make you breakfast, because really you are the reason I celebrate Mother’s Day as a mom.
