Dear Cup of tea and Donut
mmmmmmmmmm. You. You delicious golden suntanned cup of lovely tea, no, I hate to break it to you...you aren't my first, you are my 6th of the day. But you, you are the most goldeny, milky, sugary cup of tea that I have had since at least quarter past 2. I love you, you cup of tea. mmmmmmm. You lovely donut, you compliment my cup of tea, you bring out the sugaryness and you are just so delicious and lovely. I love you. I love your friends too...but tell them to stop tempting me.
Its a slow afternoon. Someone take the donuts away.

Funny how some cups are better than others even though you make it the same way!
And puh-lease stop posting about food! I'm trying so hard to be good over here - I haven't had a latte in a month and a half even though London 'filter' coffee is so bitter I feel like I'm sipping a cup of pins!

I know!! Now I want a cup of tea with milk & sugar! But it is fabulous when you get that perfect cup!

The thing with tea is that some days it just goes down really well (hence my 6 cups of tea by 2.30 pm, however, other days they aren't right. Also, the brand of tea is important. For instance Tetleys can make a good mug of builders tea, while PG Tips makes a weaker cuppa. Not to mention working in an office with 30 people who are constantly walking by your desk saying "Fancy a brew" and you know, in the UK its impolite to turn down a cuppa tea!!
Oh and not to mention the water. In the south you have the hardest chalkiest water in the world. When I lived in London we had a kettle that was held together with limescale, once I descaled it the bloody kettle fell apart!! I had to buy another one. Now in the North West, we have the most beautiful soft lovely tasting water of all...so come up north and have a real cuppa!!

Ah, see, my current office isn't so into the tea, which is good. In my old office, everyone used to ask, but I always prefer to make mine myself - so it would be just around the time that I'd want one and someone would ask and I'd have to say no because otherwise it would be "Yes, but not from you" which is kind of rude. I would lose my chance because then I couldn't just get up and say Oh, I changed my mind!
Worse than that was trying to get up to make myself a cup of tea without having to make 6 others as well! It was like a covert operation - hiding my mug while I pretended to go talk with someone before sneaking over to the kitchen!

Sorry this is turning into a Brit tea-drinking thread, but people would always give over their mugs and they were so dirty and tea-stained I couldn't bear to let anyone drink out of it - so not only would I have to make their tea, I'd have to wash their mug too!
and WORD on the limescale! It's awful! Every now and again there will be a bit of it floating in my tea when I get to the bottom of my mug

OMG I know what you mean. I make tea for the girl who sits next to me and the inside of her mug is lke a tree! you can tell how many cups of tea she has drunk by counting the rings!!!

OMG, we haven't even gotten onto the subject of sugar yet! And how it's 'common' to drink your tea with it! My oh-so-fake-posh MIL was horrified when I asked for sugar for my tea. I don't ask anymore...

You know what would happen if everyone in Britain was told that a nuclear bomb was going to fall on the country??? They would put the kettle on and brew up.
Also, 4 times a week at about 7.35 there is a HUGE power surge on the National Grid. You want to know why...thats when Coronation Street shows its first set of commercials, so everyone in the UK gets up to make a cup of tea.
True dat.

Some do use sugar, but a lot put nothing in it - just milk (or not even!)
Stereotypically, the amount of sugar you put in is usually an indication of your social standing Hence the 'builder's brew' stereotype - workmen like their tea strong and sweet...
It's all very silly, but yes, lots of Brits are way into their tea.

Its not silly at all! its important and it keeps the country running smoothly!
Most brits don't take sugar in their tea, it hasn't got anything to do with social standing, it might have done in Edwardian or Victorian times. Rich people had more sugar, so they used it in their tea. The poor people didn't have sugar and they had their tea without, and they had to do a poo in the street! And they got the plague.
