Re: Deadliest accident since 2009
To be honest, limos like that scare me. Nobody wears seatbelts, they say they don't have side impact air bags, etc. Too many deadly limo accidents. I honestly never want to be in one.
How horrific this was....

Deadliest accident since 2009
Def not meant for the celeb board.
But yes. Horrifying. All young people, a few with very young children who now just lost both parents. And yet they thought they were doing the responsible thing by hiring a limo.
The company they used was crap. 4 out of 5 violations including the car they were in that never should have been on the road. Not to mention the driver wasn’t licensed for such a vehicle.

Re: Deadliest accident since 2009
So sad and heartbreaking. I agree with Nell, I hate limos and and hate anyone else driving me except for DH or a few close friends/family. So scary how everything can change in an instant. I hope they all went quickly and didn't suffer. My heart breaks for those children who just lost both of their parents.

Re: Deadliest accident since 2009
One article I read said one reason the limo failed inspection was the brakes weren't working right. Whoever allowed it to be used after that needs to be in jail!

Sorry- you're right. I posted on the wrong board. I have no idea how to move it.

Deadliest accident since 2009
This is terrible. My friend lives in that town and was a block away when it happened. I can not even imagine what these families are going through. There were 4 sisters in there. UGH their poor parents.

It's terrible. And we all have this false sense of security that if we are driving, we are in control.
There are loads of faulty vehicles, unlicensed, and impaired drivers out there every day and night. And with even one of the two vehicles going at highway speeds....everything can change in a second.

Re: Deadliest accident since 2009
i heard it on the news.
what heartache.
one local man interviewed said that the intersection was a dangerous one... something about an incline and tractors are no longer allowed on the road because two or three had lost their brakes at that intersection.
i hadn't heard about the violations or the driver. someone does need to go to jail.

Yep. I hate driving. Despise it. I get so much anxiety on the roads. But even as a passenger, it's just freaking horrible and scary. I hate being on the roads at all, period. Unfortunately it's a necessary evil, but I just feel so uneasy all the time!

Deadliest accident since 2009
It’s so sad. I live near where it happened and it’s all over the news. My heart goes out to the families involved.
I hate going in limos and buses. Everyone makes fun of me when I put on my seatbelt, but safety is my number 1 priority. Anything could happen and best to be prepared. We went to a wedding recently and I’m pretty sure I was the only person wearing a seat belt on the shuttle.

The worst is when they want to take little kids from the bridal party in them. With no car seats or boosters. Um nope. No way in hell would my child EVER set foot in a limo.

Re: Deadliest accident since 2009
The drivers wife has set up a GoFundMe for her husband, the one operating this vehicle without the proper license, that failed inspection and ultimately led to the death of 20 innocent people. People have some nerve.

I believe I also read he had some drug charges against him in the past. Nice....

Deadliest accident since 2009
I just don't understand how all of them in the limo died. There wasn't an explosion. Was the impact so great that it internally decapitated them?

They estimate they were doing over 60 mph at the time of the crash. Nobody was wearing a seat belt I am sure. They say these huge limos are altered after the fact to make them this big so there are no side impact air bags, no roll over bars, none of the protections that are required on regular cars.

I don't understand either. I know it's none of our business but I wish there were more details regarding this. I mean...all 18 people in the limo died. Not one survived. How does that happen? They hit pedestrians but not another vehicle, so the only thing I can think of is if as it was rolling down the embankment it crushed them?

My guess is they all went flying out of the limo, just like you would in a car without a seat belt. Just so sad and avoidable.

I thought so too, but the fire department that responded to the scene said that they had to use the jaws of life on the vehicle and then pulled the bodies out (some were still alive at first). So, it seems like they weren't thrown from the limo.

Re: Deadliest accident since 2009
driving home from brooklyn sunday afternoon we passed a limo on the SI expressway and me and DH were talking about how we dont like them..like to be in them, safety, comfort, etc. and then I get home and read this article about this accident. Totally horrific. so many young people ..two newly married couples just starting their life together. what a sin.
i read that the limo wasnt originally built as a stretch, but pieced together. Not sure if that is true or speculation.

All limos start out as a stock vehicle, and are then sent to a shop to be cut in half, and have a new center section added.
"That vehicle was inspected by the New York State Department of Transportation last month and failed inspection and was not supposed to be on the road," Cuomo said.
