Daycare parents, I have a ? UPDATE, spoke to the director
I dropped Gavin off this morning and his teacher told me they were going to start practicing having him sleep on a cot, and that he would be going to the other "side" of the room into Infant A, where the kids are walking......
Gavin is 9 months old and just started crawling 2 weeks ago.
I asked who else was going and she said that Jake was going too, they are 1 day apart. I asked if the 2 other kids who have been in infant B (Gav's room) for 2-3 months would be moving as well, and she said "uh, yeah they are going too". Not sure if I believe her, but obviously we'll see,
Gavin has only been in infant B for 1 month. I really don't think he is prepared to sleep on a cot, nor should he be put in a room with kids who are walking. The 2 little girls who graduated with him to his current room aren't being moved.
DH is going to speak to them this afternoon, but I have a few questions for you.
1-Isn't he too young to be sleeping on a cot?
2-I know that they want to make room for the September kids, but can I request that he not be moved yet?
3-Form what I said, do YOU think he should be moved yet?
UPDATE
So I spoke to the director and she said that it would be fine to keep Gavin in his current room for a few more weeks, but that they will be starting him on a cot in September.
I told her that a lot of people I "know"  had their children in cribs until age 1 and she said that their kids usually start around 10 months, and that Gavin is one of the oldest in his class. Even if that is true, he's still not crawling with his belly off the floor and I want him in a crib and we would revisit the situation in September, a lot can change in a few weeks.
DH is still going to speak to her in a little while.

Really? A cot at 9 months old? IMO, that is kinda young.
When my DD was in the infant room she was in her crib until at least a year and a hlaf (until she moved to the toddler room).
Not sure how I would have felt about her being in a cot at such a young age.
I would voice your concerns with the Director of the center.

1 - In my opinion yes, I would prefer that they wait until 1 to consider moving to a cot.
2 - This was my first thought...they want to move kids up or in but you can definitely tell them that you don't want Gavin moved yet.
3 - Well...Lucas moved up at KA when he was 9 months and finally crawling on all 4s. Within a month he was pulling up and had crawling down to an olympic sport he was so fast. It might be good for Gavin developmentally but it might also be too soon. You know him best. I see the kids in that room and most appear to be standing and/or walking.
It might be a good idea to sit with the head teacher and ask her to explain why they think the move is good...how it will benefit Gavin and if they see any problems...how will they deal with it. What happens if the transition doesn't work..is he stuck or can he go back? Those kind of things.

ThanksAng, I never would have thought to bring these tings up. I know they want what's best for Gavin, but also their pocketbook is important too. I just don't like the whole cot idea, and there's no cribs in Infant A....

My wounds are still open from KA so my mind moves fast on these things...for now.
I completely understand...I mean Lucas is 14 months and even I was a little nervous about him sleeping on a cot. But at his age it is appropriate so it was good...I'm still shocked that 1-he actually sleeps on it and 2 - doesn't wander around when he wakes...he sits and sometimes cries for someone to get him  
Definitely talk with them and go on your instincts...they are always right. If you don't think he's ready then voice your concern.

I think it really depends on the child. And YOU know your child the best. So if you think it is a little too early then I would tell them you would like to wait a little

Aww, Little Gavin growing up. BUt I really do think its too early for a cot. I know my DS moces ALOT as he sleeps, and no way would I put him on a cot, not to mention he would be diving off
I would think you as a parent to do get to have a say as to what happens with Gavin. If you do not think its time for him to move, ask for a couple more months.

That is kind of young. Can you tell them that you dont want this? Milan started sleeping on the cot at 11 months and adapted pretty well. But i wouldnt let them do this at 9 months.

They are probably pushing him into the next room because they need his spot for a baby. I wouldn't want my 9 month old sleeping on a cot. That's way too young.

OK, so I just spoke to the new assistant director and told her I think he's too young to be going to the next level. She is going to speak to the director and one of them will get back to me.....
we'll see what happens.....

My daughter moved up when she was about a year, maybe a little younger, but I know she definitely wasn't walking on her own yet. They moved her up with her peers, who were all walking at that point. I was definitely concerned but I think it was very good for her to be with some older children - she really modeled the older children and was walking on her own, sleeping in her own cot, and gave up her bottle, all within a month or so.
I would say 9 months is a little on the young side, but you never know, some children do very well moving up to an older class - it really depends a lot on his personality. Perhaps they have noticed that he's more advanced, or really does enjoy being with older children? If that's the case, it might be worth a try. If it's simply to open up more room in the infant room, then that is not an acceptable reason to move him up

That doesn't seem right. Gavin is only 9 months old, which IMO is WAY too young to be on a cot. Bella's school started the whole class as a transition at somewhere after 15-16 months or even later.
I agree with ang-rich, there are several issues here....

9 months seems young for a cot, or for the other room.
My son is going into day care in November. The keep the infants in the infant room with cribs, and segregated from the toddlers, until they are 18 months.

Well, the next room isn't a toddler room yet, it's the room before toddler. But there's no cribs and the kids are just walking. THey stay there until 18 months.....

Agreed - this is definitely for the September upswing of babies. If you think it's too early (which I personally agree with you on), tell them no - they cannot force you to put him in the next room if you're citing potential harm to Gavin as the reason.

I was a little confused at first, There is technically no Infant A, it's called Newborn. Then there's Infant B and C. Gavin is currently in Infant B.
Update-No call yet, but I spoke to DH and he is going to speak to them when he picks Gavin up. He's pretty heated.....I told him there's nothing to be upset about, they prolly need the space and want to see if we say anything, kind like calling our bluff.....

I have to agree w/the OP. 9 months is WAY to young for him to be on a cot. My children didn't go to the cot until they were 12 months or older. I would stand firm on your choice.

its good you spoke to the director but at 10 mos (next month) that still sound too young for him to be sleeping on a cot. as long as you are comfortable and they have some sort of safety nets or watch him like a hawk to make sure he doesnt roll off when he's sleeping!

Well, it's very good that she was willing to listen to your concerns and to compromise and keep Gavin in his current room. I agree...a lot can happen in a few weeks so when September rolls around you can re-evaluate - until then he should stay put.
I'm not so sure about the whole cot at 10 months but that is something you can continue to discuss. It's important that Gavin doesn't miss out on sleep so as long as they can assure you that they will act in his best interest (meaning evaluating the sleep situation and acting where needed - if he isn't sleeping on the cot are they willing to go back to the crib?) it should be fine. It would be helpful for them to explain how the transition has worked for recent changes from room to room, what the action plan is, how they handle the transition, etc.

To their credit...they really do a good job with it. At 14 months Lucas was in a crib at KA...and since today was his last day he's been back and forth into the crib for naps. At TT they are great about helping him and he adjusted really well. The teacher would rub his back to help him sleep and I gave him a lovie which they said was a huge help.
I told her not to be so sweet to him...he might become accustomed to such good treatment...and we don't offer that kind of service at home

awwww, a lovie!!!!
Gavin just needs a blanket and his 2 fingers go straightinto his mouth, so hopefully it won't be that bad...
Lucas was splitting his time between the 2 DCs?
