Day Care...

Can anyone recommend how to start this search? I know of a few places, but also looking for a recommendation.

I live in the Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh area

I have a feeling this process is going to be soo overwhelming, that its better to start now (I'm 21 weeks)

Thanks!

To be honest, I felt the same way when we started looking. I made a list based on locations to home and work, recommendations... then got info on the hours/cost etc. I was able to eliminate a few just based on their days closed (does not help me if they are closed for all jewish holidays, as I am not a teacher), policies, and the latest I could pick up LO since DH and I both don't get out by 5pm most days.

Then I looked up what was left on my list on the state website to see what violations they had. We narrowed it down to 2. Went to visit them both, hated one and LOVED one and the one we loved had more flexibility, was more convienient, etc.

Our LO is not due until Feb 23 and was signed up on Aug 28! Huge weight off our shoulders!

If it helps, we are using Kiddie Academy in Bethpage, if there is one closer to you, I would check them out. We really, really like them!

I don't have a recommendation for that area, but I will say ask around as many people as you can and look for places online. I found that a lot of places either didn't want to take infants or had long waiting lists already. Then visit day cares to find one you're comfortable with. The good news is that there are a ton of places on LI. I'm in Queens and had many fewer choices because we needed something within walking distance of our apt/subway.

I agree with PP responses. If it helps, we use and are pleased with Alphabetland. FM with any questions you have about it. Good luck!

Day Care...

This was one of the very first tasks I marked off my list because I didn't want to stress about it. I agree with what caps612 said. One of the most important things is to check all of the places you have on your list with the state website.

http://it.ocfs.ny.gov/ccfs_facilitysearch/

There are a few ways to find in-home daycares on the site. If you try the family option and don't find it then search the group option on Facility Type.

Re: Day Care...

If your company has an EAP they actually offer daycare locator services in some cases. That would give you a starting point of day cares in your area.

Once we had a list I looked for recs from friends. We ended up going with Kiddie Academy in Bethpage for a lot of the same reasons caps612 picked them... They have a great holiday schedule, their hours are flexible, it is a 5min drive from my house or office and I also liked that I could go there during my lunch to BF if I wanted. I also like that they give you a 9 hour window so even though I get out on time most days, if I am running late I don't have to stress about it. DS is due 2/18 and we signed up in September.
