D&C
I'm not sure where to ask about this, and if you're willing to share, pls feel free to FM me instead of posting. I'm just doing some researching as I know tomorrow I'll likely have to decide if I want to wait to miscarry naturally or have a D&C. If you had this decision to make, can you share your thoughts on the decision/experience? Does a D&C hurt? Will I be out of work for days or just emotionally scarred? TIA

Re: D&C
Hi Caroline,
First off, I hate that this happened to you, it stinks! Second, your story sounds very similar to mine. However, I had to make the decision to have a D&C because we were going on vacation 2 days later. I am posting instead of FMing so anyone else who was curious about a D&C could know. Your doctor may give you a local anesthetic or my doctor gave me a sedative which was very very light, to take the edge off. Then after a few minutes, they start. It begins with a bunch of scraping and then the actual removal of the lining.
I won't lie, it is the most painful thing I have ever had to do, and I have had other procedures done there. The one good thing is that it is only about 5 minutes, if that. You will bleed, but how much varies. I spotted for about a week. The pain is like AF cramps. I really didn't need much by way of painkillers, just some Tylenol here and there. You will need a day to recover.
I am certainly not scarred for life, but it wasn't the most pleasant thing in the world to bear. You will get through it and you will be ok. The first few days are rough.
Best of luck to you, FM if you need more details or just want to vent. I feel your pain and hope your suffering is brief.
Gina

Re: D&C
I'm sorry for what you're going through.
I didn't have a choice. I had a D&C and for me I think it was the best case scenario. I'm not sure if I could deal with going through it naturally. I went into the hospital, was put out and within 2-3 hours I was sent home. I was a bit crampy and bled off and on for a few weeks. Emotionally I did have a hard time...it was a loss and I felt it big time. After trying for years, I found out I had a partial molar pregnancy which added insult to injury. Good luck and if you have any questions or need to vent we're here or FM me.

Re: D&C
If you can go the natural route and have a sonohystogram when you are done to make sure everything is clear I would go that route. Also then you can try sooner if you are up for it. D&C is 3 months before you can try. Natural sually is one cycle. Good luck to you. I'm so sorry

Re: D&C
I am so so sorry you have to go through this. It is never easy but just know you are not alone. I had a d&c with my frist mc since it was a missed mc ( we had a heartbeat and then it stopped developing) and then i have miscarried naturally 2 other times with chem pregnacies.
I will share my experience and hope you are able to take from it whatever you can. I was completely put under for the d&c so I did not experience pain just alot of cramping after which i took motrin for and was ok. I bled lightly for a few days. With the natural it just felt like a heavy period with more cramps. I am very anxious person and to be honest the waiting for me was very hard to take with the natural. I felt like I could not really start to move on till it was over. Given how early it was though it was the best choice in that situation. Now that we are working with a specialist the fact that we had a D&C with the 1st is helpful because they tested the baby and are able to rule out certain genetic things.
It is a tough decision and one that only you and your dh husband can make. No decision is the wrong one it is all just a matter of what is best for you. I hope my story just helped you know that you are not alone! Even though we are now suffering through multiple mc's most people i know go on to have healthy pregnancies after ther mc's without any problem! If you have any more questions please don't hesitate to FM me.
Big hugs
and wishes for a very soon!

That is one thing about the D&C you will have tissue to test. With a natural without getting to graphic you may not be able to.

Re: D&C
Thanks for all your responses. I guess I have to wait for tomorrow and see what's next. I honestly can't even believe I have to go through the ritual of another sono to ck if there's a heartbeat - seems like torture, but I know it has to be done.

Re: D&C
I am so so sorry for your loss. I had a D&C at 12 weeks (3 days after learning the baby had died) after a missed abortion. I still showed no signs of m/c naturally even though the baby had died about 2 weeks prior. The D&C was not bad at all (I was under) and I only bled that day. AF returned 7 weeks later. Doctor told me to wait 2 cycles. They sent the tissue for pathology which provided me with answers and I am grateful I had that opportunity. Go with your heart. For me, I needed the closure and waiting the 3 days was torturous. The doctor also told me to wait 2 cycles after D&C. Again, I am so sorry, I know there are no words right now, but time will help. Just let yourself grieve and know that our thoughts are with you...

Gina - you are the only other person that I've read about that had it done while awake. I had the same situation happen and it was pure hell. I would never ever do that again. I was begging them to stop, but was told once they start, they have to finish. I was in shock by the end of it. It is over quickly, although felt like forever. I didn't have much bleeding or pain after it was done. I went home and took 3 advil and was okay. My DH said he had never heard me cry like I did before because once I got in the car to go home, I lost it. The pain of the m/c and the D&C. I don't mean to sacare anyone, but it truly was worse than losing the baby for me. I felt so violated. I would opt to either m/c naturally or be put to sleep.
Caroline - I'm sorry this is happening. It stinks, but you will get through it.

Re: D&C
You are not alone....I am going into the hospital today....I thought it was for a d&c but I thought they were going to suction it out...I wasn't really listening to the doctor yesterday when I got the news. I chose to do it in the hospital and not natural because my ob said that it may not actually happen naturally and then you are waiting. He also told me that I would be able to start ttc after my first regular period after the procedure....hang in there....this situation definitely sucks but we are all here to help each other get through it.

Re: D&C
Thank you - my D&C is actually scheduled for Friday - which to me is ridiculous! We found out the baby passed away last Wednesday and have to wait a week and a half for the procedure b/c they couldn't "fit me in"!

Re: D&C
Caroline, again I am so sorry.
I lost the baby at 10 weeks, my baby measured 8.5 weeks. I was in and out of the hospital up until a week before I lost the baby (less than a week actually). I had a really bad night right before I went to see the high risk speacialist ( I just knew I lost the baby). Anyway, they scheduled a D&C for the following morning. I honestly don't knwo why they couldnt fit you in, I'm sorry about that. I went to my doctor the morning of for routine testing, then off to the hospital for prep, was put under a local. i woke up in the recovery room. I was given tylenol or motrin for the pain which I took for several days. I was still on my steroids and other meds. for the hyperemisis (Severe MS) so it took a little longer. I think that upset me most about the whole prrocess was that they fill your stomach with gas (to fill you up more and scrap- sorry for TMI) so after the surgery and for 5 more days my stomach was bloated and I looked 5 months pregnant. So that was the only thing that upset me that even though I had no more baby,I looked and felt very pregnant for another long week.
I wish you lots of luck and much baby dust for another time.
eta: I bled for 18 days, then 5 days after that got my first cycle, 28 days after that got another one...

Re: D&C
Caroline - I am so sorry. I went through the same exact thing. If I recall, there was a week between the doctor's visit and the D&C. My D&C was on a Monday - and hubby and I went out of town for the weekend to visit family. I just didn't want to be sitting around the house all weekend.
Also, I just took off Monday and Tuesday. Was back to work by Wednesday, which wasn't bad at all. I teach middle school, so I was happy for the 175 distractions around me. I think sitting home would have been worse.

Re: D&C
I wasn't at work for 3 days, I'm now ready to go back until the D&C on Friday b/c I need to start getting back into my normal routine. I am scared things could happen naturally while I'm at the office or commuting, but I can't sit here any longer.
