Croup- symptoms and questions
Emerson seems to have developed a really bad cough since yesterday morning. It sounds like it hurts her :( She didn't have a fever until about an hour ago. It was 100.5. I gave her Tylenol. She slept a little more than usual today and the cough isn't continuous, but comes and goes. People keep telling me it sounds like croup. What is it exactly? Does she need meds? Shes her normal self, playing , laughing, walking everywhere etc. Should I call the ped tomorrow even though she won't be seen til Monday?

Re: Croup- symptoms and questions
I took DS to the ped last week bc i thought he had this. ( luckily he did not)The way the nurse described it to me is that croup sounds like a barking, or like a noise a seal makes.

Ahhhh. She definetly doesn't sound like that. Hmmm I'll try the ped tomorrow if I feel it's getting worse or just make an appt on mon. Thanks

Re: Croup- symptoms and questions
DD has it now too. When she had it over the summer it was much worse and required a steroid. It sounds like a barking cough, if that makes any sense. The ped will recommend that you turn the shower water on really hot to steam up the bathroom. Keep her in there until her airways open up. If that doesn't help, bundle her up and take her outside so that the cold will hopefully open the airways. One of those two should help. Good luck!

Re: Croup- symptoms and questions
There is no mistaking a croup cough. It sounds like a seal bark.
Here's a website with an example of coughs: http://children.webmd.com/pertussis-whooping-cough-10/coughing-sounds
The best thing you can do is start running a cool mist humidifier. I would call the pediatrician if you have any doubts. Just because she doesn't have a seal bark, doesn't mean it's not bronchitis, etc.
Hope she's better soon.
Quick note on the cool mist versus the warm shower option - the cold will reduce the swelling in the bronchial tubes, which is why you choose cold. When it gets really bad, we've wrapped our child in a blanket & taken them out into the cool night air. But again, go with your gut. PM Pediatrics is open until midnight if you want to avoid the ER.
