Croup questions?
How long does Croup last?
We're supposed to have friends come out next weekend. They have 2 small kids (2 yrs old and 1 yr old).
Jacen started with the barking cough today. Do you think he'll still be contagious on friday?

Re: Croup questions?
All three of my kids have had it and all three have been different. My ds had it the worst in March and he was really sick with the barking cough for 3 days and then it eventually got better each day. It was a little over a week total that he had somewhat of a cough though.

So is it contagious that whole time?

Re: Croup questions?
It is really hard to say. There was once where my oldest dd had it and only my ds got it but not my middle dd. Then there was a time where only my ds got it and both my girls were fine. I would maybe play it by ear and see how and if he gets it this week. Hopefully he may just have a small cold and it may not turn into croup. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Re: Croup questions?
Well croup isn't an illness - so it really depends on what is causing the croup b/c that is what causes the swelling that brings on the croupy cough and the stridor-it could be from Allergy, Cold, Respiratory illness, etc My DD gets it from allergies (she gets spasmodic croup) - for us it lasts anywhere from 1 night -4 nights - but she isn't contagious since it is from allergies. The same rules would apply as to how long they are contagious I would imagine would depend on what is causing it.
I would think by the weekend your DC should be okay - but again it depends on what they have that is causing it. You might need to make the plans tentative and tell them whether your DC is better later in the week.

Re: Croup questions?
that is hard to know - if he got it from his cousin I would say it was a virus not allergy then. Usually they have cold symptoms or something first. Did he have anything like that? Does he have a fever?

Yes on thursday he started with the extreme runny nose and a small cough. Then the cough got progressively worse. Still the runny nose.

I would say he probably has a cold - but if you aren't sure your ped should be able to tell if it is a virus or an infection. If the cough has gotten worse you might want to just get him checked out to make sure it isn't an infection that needs antibiotics rather than just a cold. Hope he feels better soon - croup isn't fun.
