crate training and crying all night!..update night #4

How do I get him to stop crying and howling and barking ALL NIGHT?
We are crate training, but at night he just cries and howls the entire night!
Any suggestions?
This is night #3 and I haven't slept in 2 days!

Update for night # 3:
I tried to keep him playing as long as possible. W put the blanket over the crate, and i put the shirts that DH and i were wearing in the crate.
at 12:30 he was falling asleep so i put him in the crate. he didn't start crying until 2:30.
i'm not sure how long the crying lasted. mabey an hour. But then not a peep until I went downstairs at 6:30.
Thanks for all the suggetions. hopefully it gets better.
Update night #4:
Well he started crying and howling at 5:15!! I tried to ignore it but couldn't. I felt bad thinking he had to pee or something.
He went to sleep around 1:00am. But he slept from 11-12 before DH got home. I couldn't keep him awake anymore! so I had DH play with him for a little to tire him out so he would sleep.
I'm soooo tired!
Then this morning from 6:30 to 8:00 i slept on the couch and Max slept on his big pillow next to me. Chat Icon

It will get better.........may take a little while..........but ti will get better.

It depends on each dog. My first cried the first few nights...the second cried for about 3 weeks.....we ended up moving his crate downstairs away from the bedroom but it was still loud as hellChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am SOOOOO with ya. We just got an 6 week old puppy and she is doing the same. I read some where to put in an old sweatshirt or something that has your scent on it and put a treat in it.

I failed at crate training due to the crying. I wasn't sleeping and it was awful...so i tried moving the crate into my room, and that just made the crying sound closer! lol In the end little tinky joined us in our bed...same thing happened to my friend! Oh well it was great! she is an amazing bed companion!

It will get better, he just has to get used to the fact that this is where he sleeps .......My Yorkie barked and barke and cried ALL night for months .........I was HORRIBLE!!

But the little beast now goes right in there when we're leaving the house ........she doesn't always sleep in the crate at night though, sometimes she manages to get into our bed !!! - But otherwise, she's back in the crate and she's fine -

You are much stronger than us. It took about three nights of us sleeping on the floor next to the crate, with me crying most of the night - and then we just brought him into the bed with us and he has been there ever since Chat Icon

be strong!!!

That is why I didn't want hiom to keep crying. I figured he was crated for over 5 hours that he may have to pee. When I let him out he doesn't pee right away. I think the excitment of me letting him out distracts him. HE wants to cuddle with me instead. But I leave him fenced in with the paper until he goes.

A CAN OF COINS!!!

We tried everything from a blanket, to playing music, to putting her in a totally separate and quiet area - we even would play with her like crazy, rock her to sleep and then slip her in there hoping she wouldn't wake up and that she would make it through the night.

NOTHING WORKED... around the one month mark, I'm talking thirty days STRAIGHT my husband had ENOUGH. He went down there, put about 30-40 pennies in a coffee can and wrapped the coffee can in masking tape. Then, he went in where she was and shook the can violently for a few seconds. He told her to "SHUT UP" (loudly) and left the can in front of the crate. She NEVER did it again - EVER. It has now been two and a half years without a PEEP, a WHINE, a WHIMPER - NOTHING. We ended up using that can as our "correction can" for every bad behavior. Now, if she SEES the can she just shakes and runs to her bed with her tail tucked!

Was it the most loving/humane thing in the world? No.

Was it better than beating her? Yes.

It never touches her - it is just noise but it works like a charm. She needed to know that certain behaviors are just not allowed and that we are boss. So, it helped a lot. To this day she is an angel, honestly, that rarely does anything bad. We are lucky but at the same time we worked hard with her and never, ever gave in.

Hope that helps - I know it is hard! Hang in there! Chat Icon

i've heard that if you put a ticking clock near the cage at night, that will remind him of his mother and be a comfort.

Re: crate training and crying all night!..update night #4

We went thru it also. The puppy's crate should be put in your room so the pup can smell and hear you. I think you said it is, but I'm just generalizing. He cried every couple of hours and I would get up and take him out, let him do his thing, give him a treat, and back in the crate. He'd cry and go back to sleep. Once he was a few months old, he was sleeping (and growing) out of the crate and slept on a blanket next to the bed. Now he is either in the bed with us or on the sofa. :) I think the big thing is not leaving the puppy alone like in another room or on another floor. They are used to cuddling with their mommy and siblings and then to suddenly be left alone can scare them and cause anxious behavior. But definitely take the pup out also every couple of hours.

It definitely does get better...my puppy is now almost 10 mos old and he used to do the same. a dog trainer recommended getting a squirt bottle filled with water and squirting him on full stream setting. it kind of worked but it made him wary of the crate (how can you blame the furry boy?). i wasn't crazy about it from that aspect.

at least it seems like your puppy is getting up later and later....

Re: crate training and crying all night!..update night #4

Its been a week and it is so much better. I actually think he sleeps too much! I'm going to ask the vet on Monday when I go.
He slept from 11:30 last night until 9:00 this morning!!! I don't think that is normal. And if he wasn't sleeping the whole time he must have been playing with his toys. He didn't have an accident either!
He isn't in our bedroom. He is near the kitchen. We put the shirts that we wore that day in his crate so that he smells us. I change it evey few days.

Re: crate training and crying all night!..update night #4

I disagree with putting the crate in your room. I think my puppy cried more when she could hear us. I kept the crate in the living room, and put a blanket over it. Yes, she cried the first few weeks, but we stayed strong. You really have too!! In the beginning they do have to pee a lot, so it could be the reason they are crying. Most of the time it is just because they want attention. If you do let the dog out to pee, don't talk to him/her, let them out to pee, and put them immediately back into the crate. Our dog is now 8 months old and we still leave her in the crate when we go out and when we sleep. SHe loves her crate, and actually goes and lies down in it, even if we are in the room with her. I feel much better knowing she is safe in her crate when we go out. I also don't want her in our bed, since it is crowded enough with DH and I. You are doing good!!!

It sounds like you are doing great! When you go down to let him down at night, I would avoid eye contact with him. Just let him out, let him do his thing and then put him back. If he thinks he'll get any attention from you it'll just reinforce his crying. You might already be doing this- I couldn't tell for sure so sorry if I'm telling you to do what you're already doing!

Taken from the Humane Society website, and as stated on many other training sites: (This is why I put the crate in our room, I read it in every book and article I could find):

Step 4, Part B: Crating Your Dog at Night

Put your dog in the crate using your regular command and a treat. Initially, it may be a good idea to put the crate in your bedroom or nearby in a hallway, especially if you have a puppy. Puppies often need to go outside to eliminate during the night, and you'll want to be able to hear your puppy when he whines to be let outside.

Older dogs, too, should initially be kept nearby so that they don't associate the crate with social isolation. Once your dog is sleeping comfortably through the night with his crate near you, you can begin to gradually move it to the location you prefer, although time spent with your dog—even sleep time—is a chance to strengthen the bond between you and your pet.

Thanks! But he is a Boxer! A lot of people have mistaken him for a boston because of his coloring.
