Crashing--Could you enlighten a CF woman please?

I saw this chart on one of my Facebook friends wall and I was surprised at some of the things listed for the ages. A lot of the chores seemed a bit much for certain ages to me. A toddler is supposed to be able to clean baseboards and unload a dishwasher? I did get a bit of a chuckle where is specifically says "with supervision" next to wash dishes under the 4-5 year olds chore list. External Image

My girls "help" me to a degree with some of the things on that list.

I feel it's more a guideline, then a list of what they "must" do, kwim?

DD is only 11 months but she will help put her toys away sometimes. I could definitely see her helping with many of the things on the list at those ages. She already loves to imitate anything I do like wiping her high chair tray with a rag after I'm done. I could see unloading silverware (after anything sharp is removed). It would be a good sorting activity to have them hand you all the spoons, then all the forks, etc.

This list is odd to me.I would never ask my 4yo to wipe out bathroom sink. Or do half of those things. Is this list a suggestion of what they "can" do? I don't mind a child helping or doing a chore, but this list just strikes me as training your child to do what I believe is the adults jobs in the home. JMO anyway

I've seen this before. It's a list of chores which are age appropriate for a child of that age, it's not a list to enslave your child (because by middle school, they're pretty much doing it all if you have them doing EVERY chore on there)

My 2 year old will sort the silverware (after sharps are removed) and put away the tupperware. She also can help with moving the clothes to the dryer etc.

My 5 year old sets the table, folds the napkins, feeds the cats, feeds the dog dry food (2 year old does this as well, they take turns), feeds her fish, collects the bathroom/office garbage (small cans). She also is supposed to make her bed every day and clearing her plate after every meal.

Both my girls ASK to help do things, so it's nice to have ideas on what they can help out with that they can do. It doesn't mean they do it as good as I want it, but they enjoy doing it and it's nice to have them helping. And it IS training your child: for LIFE. There's nothing wrong with teaching your child to do their laundry at an appropriate age. There's nothing wrong with teaching them to cook by allowing them to help you, it's a good bonding experience. And there is nothing wrong with teaching them to help out with chores either. It also teaches them responsibility

I agree with all of that!

I know my child is only 5 months old, so my personal experience only comes from being Montessori teacher.

I honestly see nothing really outrageous on the list, especially because children want to help. The students in my class range from 2 1/2 - 7 and they love to use the vacuum when we have it out, or help wipe down the tables for lunch. If they see us cleaning (dusting, putting new works out, wiping down dishes), they offer to assist, and we teach them how to do everything to the best of their ability. No we don't force them do any of these things, but we don't discourage either - and you'd be surprised what they ask to help out with.

I'm in the boat that if they ask and want to do, I'll be more than happy to teach and allow them. So I see that list as a guideline, and a pretty awesome one at that.
