Covid testing and no symptoms?

What is the point? I’m hearing people are getting tested because:
1. They want to see an elderly person or someone with underlying condition. Ok well that makes no sense because you may get a negative today but a positive tomorrow.
2. They MIGHT have been exposed. You were either exposed or not. If you were, quarantine and get tested if symptoms. Or quarantine until the person who potentially exposed you gets their results.
3. They were exposed. Quarantine and get tested if symptoms.
4. They may have been exposed and just want a negative so they justify not quarantining. Selfish, no further comment.

I’m just annoyed because I have a friend who had a fever and slight congestion and wants to do the right thing but is getting turned away at walk ins because there are so many people getting tested for reasons that do not require a test. Even the employees at the walk in were annoyed at the amount of people getting tested who shouldn’t be.

And while I’m ranting...if you are awaiting your results....STAY HOME!

I thinks it’s because of all the push to get tested. Everywhere u turn all u hear is get tested, get tested, get tested. Forget about symptoms...most important thing is...get tested. Don’t agree with this but that’s pretty much all u hear.

Re: Covid testing and no symptoms?

Ever see the commercials on TV? Get tested often, even if you don't have any symptoms.
Chat Icon
Does anyone actually do this? How often?
Like do you just go get tested every 2 weeks on a Friday? Like a self care routine?
Even if you have no symptoms and haven't been exposed to anyone who has it?
Is it like the new civic duty?
I cannot imagine just going to get a test when I feel as amazing and healthy as I have for the past 6 months.

Yep just like social media. Got to do what everyone else is doing to feel included and popular. This is not something you need to follow the crowd.
When was the last time you went to the doctor to check to see if you were sick or has cancer or anything else you had no symptoms of? Probably never and there is no proof that if you are asymptomatic you can spread the virus.

Covid testing and no symptoms?

I did because of 3 of my direct co-workers got Covid the week before Christmas. I had no symptoms but wanted peace of mind that I was not going to be putting my parents at risk when I saw them for Christmas. If that doesn't make sense to you then so be it, but it made me feel better about things. I tested negative the Tuesday before Christmas and still have not developed any symptoms and feel fine.

Re: Covid testing and no symptoms?

When the smart government pushes for testing and testing and more testing.. people listen. All they did was overwhelm testing centers and I know several people who needed to get tested and couldn’t because the lines were ridiculous.

But you know it’s the government, Data and science so the plan makes sense.

That's not what OP was referring to. You were legitimately exposed

It’s just mind boggling. Perfectly healthy people standing on long lines in the rain and snow with potential covid patients to get tested when they don’t have to. And the opposite is true....sick people waiting in line all day in bad weather when, in theory, there shouldn’t be long lines.

On another testing note, I am genuinely curious to know the positivity rate for those returning from travel. If you choose to get tested in lieu of quarantining. Is the rate extremely low? Maybe we can do away with testing upon return if “science” shows people are not catching it while traveling??

Unless things have changed isn’t just get tested if you have symptoms and quarantine if exposed and no symptoms?!?!

Obviously if your required for work or other situations that is different.

I just couldn’t believe the people on the news being interviewed who wanted to get negative results before seeing family in gatherings at home (you know, where more than half of the spread occurs lol)

And if you are exposed and a close contact you quarantine. Get tested if symptoms. You don’t get tested and go about your life because you got a negative. People don’t test positive till day 10 sometimes.

She referred to this on #3 saying they were exposed, and implied that if this is the case they should quarantine and get tested if symptoms. I am an essential employee to NY state and can not quarantine just because I was exposed, in fact, they want us back at work once we are symptom free if even we still have it. Go figure on that one...

Your frustration is displaced.

Why isn’t testing widely available? That has always been the key to keeping this under control.

We should all be disappointed in our elected officials who are not protecting the lives of all of us. Let’s not throw stones at people getting testing and in some way trying to do the right thing. Blame congress, Trump and local govts who are not doing enough.

Covid testing and no symptoms?

My father is essential and is now testing every few days - one - to to safe to his coworkers, two- to be safe with my mother. They are 77 years old.

My dad works in cremation and if he doesn’t work the bodies stack up. Sorry if some think that’s graphic but it’s the reality of what’s out there.

They are telling people to test regularly so that people will know they have it and stop the spread. Testing often catches all the people that either do not have symptoms or have minor symptoms that would not scream Covid.

Covid testing and no symptoms?

I will not get tested unless I feel sick or know that I was a direct contact of someone who tested positive. I get what you are saying, negative tests may give people the false sense of security to do whatever they want.
I know someone who was exposed on Dec. 22nd, tested negative on Christmas Eve, and had family over on Christmas Day, including a 6 month old grandchild. Completely irresponsible and boggles my mind.

Did they do a rapid test to know that quickly?

However, the government should have a plan for people to get tested regularly. They shouldn’t be pushing for regular testing if we are not set up to support it. It overwhelms the centers and people who really are positive and should be getting tested are quarantining instead. Isn’t contract tracing vital, how can that happen if these ridiculous lines are a deterrent?

I agree the getting tested regularly with absolutely no reasons but just to do it, isn’t helping anyone. Now if there were home kits or enough centers/medical offices to support it then fine. But there aren’t.

Also there is a strain of the flu that is causing rapid test to come back positive. So people should be weary of that. Symptoms could mean something else. Which is a little scary.

Hmmm haven’t heard of anyone having the flu or common cold so now they are saying a strain of the flu could be coming up positive?
Covid’s symptoms have a combo of the common cold, flu and or pneumonia.

I think they need to.do away with the rapid test for many reasons. Too many false negatives. Now you are saying false positives?
What's the point of such an inaccurate test ???

I am going to be honest, who cares. If people want to be tested for peace of mind for whatever the reason, that is their business. There are so many more important things to be concerned with right now regarding COVID than over testing. What is the worst case scenario here? Maybe some people find out they are sick with COVID when they didn't have symptoms and now can quarantine to stop further spread. That is a good thing.

Personally, I wouldn't want to be tested unless I thought I was exposed. I had to have the test done twice before surgery this past summer and I'd rather avoid that unpleasant experience if I can help it.

Ultimately, I would rather we over test for COVID then under test. There really is no harm in testing more people and even more often.

Yes. I just found that out and was shocked. So my nieces friend and her family got tested before seeing her grandmother on Christmas. Then they go test after. Both were negative. Two days later she had a fever, and the the rapid test was positive. The doctor said he didn’t think she had Covid because she had just been tested twice and there was a flu strain detecting positive in rapid tests. She did the real test and it was negative as the rest of them family all came back negative. She ended up testing positive for the flu.

I didn’t believe it at first but since the doctor was saying it it held validity and he was right. It’s a little scary for me that I could be suffering horribly from the flu but won’t be able to get treatment till after a week of getting clearance from Covid.

I think they should do away with the rapid test or maybe do flu test at the same time? Idk but it’s seems like rapid test are false sense of security and wasting time.

ETA: the reason why my niece was told about this is because two days before the positive test she had stood over her house. So the mom was letting everyone know.

Yes and you need Tamiflu in the first 48 hours of flu symptoms right? So not knowing it's flu for so long will make therapeutics like Tamiflu useless
That is very scary.
