counters from lowes or home depot stores
Dh and i are shooping for new countertops. Went to lowes tonight and obviously they dont have all samples out of each color. Nor d they have any photos of the products, just the small samples.
Im a bit frustated in that we have to imagine how it will look as a full counter. Im sure if we went to a specialty kitchen store we could see what their product looks like in some kind of portfolio. Anyone else have this angst? I'm havin a hard time making a decision based on a 4" square.

If you are looking at granite I would go to a granite place.
I found HD and lowes prices to be much higher than other places.

If you're looking for granite definitely go to a granite place, you will get to pick your piece and see the actual color, a 4 inch square can be so misleading.
Depending on the cut you could wind up getting completely different colors.

If you are looking at solid surface many places might not have bigger samples because there is little to no variation in the pattern unlike granite.
The only thing you might find is the installer might have a larger piece left over from another project.

Hadn't thought of that. But for me to get in touch with the installler im thinking i have to place my order.
The ones they did display seemed darker than the small samples, thats why i was frustrated. Guess i'll have to keep my fingers crossed that my choice is a good one. But spending that kind of money on a big change for something youre not quite sure how its goign to look is annoying!

Re: counters from lowes or home depot stores
I do NOT recommend buying high price items at Home Depot or Lowes.
I'm renovating my kitchen and am a big bargain hunter. When comparing big ticket items like cabinets and countertops, I find those big box stores to be way expensive.
Even if there's a good sale, you can be sure some store that specifically sell home products will have lower prices, more knowledgeable staff and better selection.
Case in point, my neighbor recently bought 10 Kraftmaid quality cabinets for what she thought was a good price at HD. Well, I priced out the same Kraftmaid stuff at 2 reputable cabinet dealers for half the cost! And there were more door styles and stain selection at the dealers!

ITA and you do not pick the installer. They ahve a bunch workign for them and some are horrible. My sister used HD and they had to redo the counters 3x before they were correct.

Re: counters from lowes or home depot stores
We had a kitchen counter from lowes - We gave them the measurements picked the color from a sample - (formica) and they cut it out for the sink and to size - cost us $150 and looked great - Our kitchen is completely different now - but everyone always thought it was granite. Image Attachment(s):

Re: counters from lowes or home depot stores
You arent going to get the best price from Home Depot or Lowes. I would go elsewhere.
Go on the website of the solid surface counter top you are looking to install and see who they list as installers.
Then call around and get estimates for the job. Haggle your tush off. Then in the end ask them to include a sink or edge upgrade. They'll be more apt to do it then Lowes or HD.

Re: counters from lowes or home depot stores
I had silestone counters installed by
http://www.nequartz.com/index.html
but I bought them through HD. For me this was the best plan due to I have no alone time (without son) to do anything. I have not had any problems with them (been only 2 weeks) but HD has been great with another problem I had.
I bought a sample of silestone from their website and it was a lot bigger than the ones in the store.

It's tooting our horn a bit... but...
Stop in and browse our showroom displays in Williston Park to see full kitchens with a variety of countertop materials. That way you can see what the counters look like in a larger slab. We have a lot to look at.
Alternatively for inspiration, visit the website and blog (tons of photos and detailed info to "create the look").
