Couches -- leather or microfiber?

DH and I are shopping around for a new couch for our bonus room. The room is a multi-purpose room that will be used for lounging around, watching TV, and for having friends over to watch the games, etc. Occassionally, when we have friends over, we may have someone sleep on the couch.

We're trying to decide if leather or microfiber (like the fake suede) is better for that room. In general, we're not fans of leather because it doesnt seem as comfy as microfiber.

Which do you have and what do you like/dislike about it??

I just dumped my chocolate brown microfiber suede couches after 5 years. They just didn't wear well and spot staining made water marks. I replaced them with chocolate brown leather and LOVE them!! I wipe them down with leather wipes and they stay beautiful!!

Re: Couches -- leather or microfiber?

I hesitated when I bought my 1st leather couch for the same reason, but I have severe allergies & fabric furniture is a no-no so I had no choice. We now have leather in both our den & living room and love it. In addition to its being hypoallergenic, it's easy to clean & maintain. Our living room set is a firm sofa, which is the type that you might be thinking about...it's comfortable, but no where near as much as our den set is. The set in the den is a soft, overstuffed leather. It's SO comfy that people never want to get up Chat Icon When you look I'd reallly shop around - you might find that some leather sets are even cushier than the microfiber. Good luck with your decision!

Haha! We just dumped our leather couch and recliner (literally - it was sitting out for the garbage men to take this morning). We are expecting delivery of a chenille 3 piece set today. My DH hated the leather furniture which I had bought before we met. His argument was that it wasn't suitable for lounging on in the TV room, and I kind of have to agree. You stick to the leather in the Summer and in the Winter it's cold.

I looked at microfiber but decided against it because I have seen some friend's couches and they got kind of "shiny" from wear. We went with the chenille in the end and added the 7 year fabric warranty.

So, if this is for a room where you lounge and watch TV, my advice would be to go with a softer fabric. The leather looks gorgeous but is not all that comfortable.

ETA: The leather lasted forever and still looks good 8 years later, so I hope the new fabric is as good.

I wanted leather, but everything I liked was $5K and up. So I ended up getting microfiber...figuring I'll replace it it when the kids are a little older and I have more money! Chat Icon

We also got rid of our microfiber couches and bought a chocolate brown leather sectional. I love leather and I hated the microfiber looked. It always looked dirty to me. And I actually think the leather is easier to keep clean, everything just brushes off.

Same here and i have a 2 and 1 year old and believe me they clean up VERY WELL! Mine is 3 years old and still looks new.

My guests LOVE to sleep on my sectional..they say it's more comfy than a bed and i agree..dh and i fall asleep on it, then have trouble falling asleep in bed.

I'm not a fan of leather..to me it's not worth the extra $$$$

Re: Couches -- leather or microfiber?

I love my leather couch and chair. And I definately think it depends on what kind of leather you get- I have never stuck to my couch nor has it been cold in the winter. Our leather is really soft, overstuffed and comfy. And it's easy to clean- tons of stuff has been spilled on it and you'd never know!!

Re: Couches -- leather or microfiber?

I don't like leather because it cracks. FILs had it, replaced their couch and it's doing it again. There den has chennile and it upholds better. We opted for microfiber for our house and I love it.

Re: Couches -- leather or microfiber?

We have a microfiber sectional and love it. DH had it before we moved in together, and it's held up nicely through the years. You'd never be able to tell how old it is. And every single person who sits on our couch either tells us they could fall asleep on it, or they actually do fall asleep.Chat Icon

Re: Couches -- leather or microfiber?

We bought micro fiber and liek it alot b/c it's sooooo comfty. However, from the kids getting it dirty and me cleaning it...it now has water stains on it. It's doens't have that formal look to it anymore. We decided to put that couch in the playroom and we just invested in a leather couch from JC Penny. The leather couch will be the formal couch while the kids can go to town on the microfiber.

Sometimes when you have kids it's inevitable to keep things "perfect."

Re: Couches -- leather or microfiber?

We have a microfiber couch and it is in excellent shape, but to be honest we are not living room people....we watch tv and eat in our bedroom.
So the couch really didnt get much wear at all.

I have beige microfiber couches. Love them. Easy to clean (handy since we have a cat), soft, cozy, informal... perfect for us
