Re: Cord Blood Banking ???
We banked our little guys cord blood and cord tissue through cb
Decided to do tissue too even though five years ago it was brand new and only offered by cbr. We felt in case of anything , we'd rather have it than kick ourselves for not having i Good luck to you!

We banked blood and tissue with both DD's.
We used Lifeline Cryogenics for one, and family cord for the other

I banked for both of my kids, just the blood. I don't remember exactly how much it cost, but I want to say around 3500 per baby (we paid in full upon collection so we will never get a bill from them). We used CBR.

May I ask how much this costs?
There's an initial investment usually - testing/sampling usually
And $1500 a year to store it, generally (from what I recall) I think I read via cord is increasing costs come January ..
It was still pretty new it seemed when I had my first.. I researched it a bit, spoke to my doctor about it. It wasn't something I could justify. Maybe if there was a history of diseases and such in our family... Maybe then i would have considered it more seriously. My obgyn , who is very seasoned, one of the best you can be a patient under .. Didn't seem sold on the idea. I trusted her viewpoint.

It was under $2K for the initial banking, we pay $125/yr to store it.

$1500 to store it???? That sounds wrong. We paid about that for the initial banking and collection. We used Viacord, it's only $125/yr to store the blood.

I just looked at the viacord site and this was from their pricing section. Maybe it went up? Or depends on whatever you pick? Not sure.
Here it is:
Thank you for considering ViaCord. (And we mean that.) ViaCord offers several banking options to meet the needs of your family. Start with our flagship, cord blood service and annual storage at $1375 for the first year and then customize with additional options.

That price is just for the first year because it includes the collection. If you click on the pricing link to customize your options you'll see that the storage fee after the first year is only $175/yr. Nobody would bank if there was a yearly storage fee of $1375.
ETA - It's $1200 for the collection of cord blood for one child plus the $175 storage fee hence the $1375 in the first year.

Cord Blood Banking ???
Oh that's not too out of sight then. Isn't there also a difference between public and private banking too? It's interesting stuff overall. I wonder how many partake in it now. I don't know anyone IRL who has (yet).

Re: Cord Blood Banking ???
I did a ton a research on it and in the end decided against it. For 2 reasons:
1st - Chances are a transplant would never be needed and in the off chance someone does need a transplant, they usually cannot use their own stem cells so a donor is required. At the time I looked into it (about 18 months ago) your own banked cord blood could only help treat 4 very rare cancers. The rest would have required a donor anyway.
2nd - We are white so according to Be the Match registry there is a 97% chance of finding a donor match if a transplant was ever needed
That being said - I absolutely would have donated it to the public bank if that was an option because chances are if it was ever needed, there is a very high chance (I don't have the exact % in front of me) that it would still be in the public bank waiting for you. Unfortunately, the hospital I delivered at doesn't participate in that but you can go to the Be the Match website to find what hospitals do participate.
If we were a different race/ethnicity I might have reconsidered based on the probability of finding a match if it was ever needed.

Cord Blood Banking ???
the hospital I delivered - Winthrop didn;t participate in the donation. I would have paid the fee to my dr like $400 for him to collect. Neither of us had family history of illness that would benefit and money is tight so we didn't opt for private storage.

Same. I asked my OB for her opinion and she was not for it. I tried to donate but the cord did not have enough material anyway, and was tossed.

Re: Cord Blood Banking ???
You can always do delayed cord clamping and that's free!
Instead of saving the stem cells in case the baby may need them why don't you be proactive and give hen to the baby now. The doctor delays cutting the cord and while you hold your baby for the first time ever the stem cells are pumping from the cord into the baby.

Exactly this! The benefits are immediate and guaranteed, not sitting in a freezer somewhere to likely never be used.

This. Also your ob is probably being paid to refer you. Plus the blood is usually not enough especially for kids over 10 and they don't know how to replicate it or keep it more than 25 years or so. I banked publicly. I don't want to call it a scam, but I think without some specific family history you are sort of being marketed to as a vulnerable new parent. Jmo
