coop preschools?

Somebody was telling me about a town run co-op preschool (in CT) that charges $150 per month per child. You just have to commit to help out with a few fundraisers every year.

Do any co-op preschools exist here on LI (ideally Nassau)?

Re: coop preschools?

Almost every town has some I am sure. Where do you live? That would help guide people to suggest ones by you.

I'm in NJ... but try looking at local churches. a lot of them have co-op preschools that aren't really religious, but just use the church building during the week.
I'm in NJ- and my son goes to a co-op school that's at a local church. he goes 3 AMs a week. Its cheaper bc the parents take turns being the teacher's assistant. It works out to be I think 8 days this school year that I'll be in there. We get our helping day schedule in August, so you have time to plan. When its your helping day, you bring the snack for the class, and help the teacher with things like art projects, taking kids to the bathroom, etc.
I really love it bc it gives a chance to be in there once in awhile and see how your kid is doing in class, what kinds of things they're doing. you also get to the know the other parents and kids pretty well, too that way.
so, just see if any local churches have schools at them.... I found DS school from just driving by the church and seeing the sign for the school out front Chat Icon

Well there is usually more than helping with a few fundraisers. The garden city co-op for example you go into 4-6 times a year and you go into the classroom for the day and help out. You also have to join one of the committees. Father's go 2x a year to do maintenance (raking, painting, etc). That is on top of fundraising. It was nice to go in a lot and see the kids but it was hard for working parents. Many had dads, grandparents etc help out with the commitments. It is fun and a grata way to meet others but some parents were not prepared for all that was required. I had looked into another co-OP several years ago and they had similar expectations.

Here's the info for Firehouse School in East Meadow. A friend of ours sent his kids there and highly recommended it.

yup!! really true!!! they tend to be a little bit cheaper than other preschools because of all the work the parents do. like i said, i'll be in there 8 days this school year ( so about once a month) helping out for the 2.5 hours. DSs school also does a few field trips, and if you want your kid to go, you (or DH or grandparent or whoever) has to go, too. so that takes up another couple mornings during the school year, plus driving to wherever the field trip is to. and each family has to raise a certain amount of money per school year, in addition to tuition. they do a ton of fundraisers so theres a lot of chances to get that money... but its just one more thing Chat Icon
I'm a SAHM with one kid- so it all works out ok for me (although some days i would REALLY rather have the time to get some stuff done than have my helping day LOL ) but even some other SAHMs with more than 1 kid have trouble finding somebody to watch the other kid while they do their helping day. and if your kid is sick the day you have to help out, its scrambling to find somebody to swap with you....
SO as great as it is, and I'm really happy we went this route.... there are some downsides- so just make sure you really know the requirements for whatever school you find!

Bethpage nursery school is a coop but it doesn't cost less than a reg nursery school and participation and tasks are expected unless you pay an opt out fee.
