Cool Mist Humidifier vs. Warm
I didnt register for either but someone gave us the hot air humidifier- we used it last winter but I am seeing on here for colds and such that people say use the cool mist one... does it make a difference? Why one over the other?

Always cool mist. .warm is fire hazard and promotes bacteria.

Re: Cool Mist Humidifier vs. Warm
We've always gone with the cool mist. We actually bought a warm mist one last year and there were big warnings inside that it could cause a burn if touched. With my DD being in a bed and being able to move around we decided it wasn't a good idea.

Re: Cool Mist Humidifier vs. Warm
You want cool because when they have a dry cough, croup, RSV, etc, the cold air reduces the inflammation in the bronchi & & bronchioles passages to allow air to pass into the lungs.
That horrible gasping sound means the tubes are so swollen, your kid can barely get oxygen to his/her lungs.
If you're in a serious pinch in the middle of the night, you can wrap them in a blanket & bring them outside. The cool night air will help.

so here's a dumb question.. why do they sell the warm one then? Why does Vicks promote the warm mist one specifically for kids? its maddening - we just got the warm one (i had no idea there were even options) and im not too fond of it since i hate humidity. But since it said specifically for kids on there, i thought it was the better one
who knew??

Exactly... I've spent more time standing in the aisle staring at humidifiers in BRU and BBB and looking up reviews online - and I STILL don't own one because I don't know which one to buy!
Plus, I haven't found any humidifiers that have RAVE reviews - even if I DID know to buy cool or warm.

Re: Cool Mist Humidifier vs. Warm
I have a warm mist Vicks vaporizer. It works well. We use it when she's sick but can make the room warmer than expected. We also keep it away from her so she can't reach it. We do have to clean every so often to clean it out and get rid of bacteria. You just have to fill it with white vinegar and let it run for a few.
I don't know why we have a warm vs cool haha.

Baby gear manufacturers sell a lot of things that are secretly "bad." If they can make money from it, they'll keep selling it.
