Re: Controversial Topic....let's discuss!

Depends on the food!

Brinkley's dog food has fish and potatoes in it, aren't those "human" foods too? We give him GOOD human food and once in a while something bad. Like plain vanilla ice cream.

He gets carrots, snap peas, string beans. On Thanksgiving we gave him turkey and mashed potatoes. We also feed him powdered garlic on a daily basis as a replacement for flea & tick treatments. Add human vitamins to his food like fish oil pills and vitamin E for his dry skin.

Vet says his weight is perfect, he's healthy, got a great coat, and is just fine. Must be doing something right. Chat Icon

Re: Controversial Topic....let's discuss!

With my first cat I was more guilty of this.
With my new one I'm trying to be better about it but it's hard.
Forget it if I open a can of tuna. There is no WAY i'm getting away without giving him at least a taste of that.
I try to keep him away from everything else though...I figure if I don't start maybe he won't fall into bad habits...

My cats don't eat people food... but my horses LOVE Peeps. Seriously!

They also love carrots, apples, peppermints, and... just about anything you put in front of them. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm really not big on giving my horses treats, though -- mainly for behavioral reasons (and also because one chokes)... but I do give them from time to time. Chat Icon

Re: Controversial Topic....let's discuss!

I am guilty of this. I refuse to feed her at the table and try my hardest not to feed her human food out of my hand.

But....I do put some "leftover" food from our plates in her food dish. She eats it from there...which has helped tremendously with the begging.

Does any one actually NOT feed their pets human food EVER???? If there is...good for you!

I am guilty of this. Carrots are Petunia's favorite snack. She loves apples too.

Re: Controversial Topic....let's discuss!

I don't think fruits and veggies are things to feel guilty about. In moderation. When we were trying to get Brinkley to lose weight, we were told to substitute bagged treats for non-poisonous fruits and veggies. They're a lot healthier that most of the stuff you could find on a shelf at Petco!

I forgot to say, we give him apple slices and pieces of banana too. Once in a blue moon, I'll fill a Kong with plain white yogurt (helps with digestion), low fat peanut butter (just a teaspoon, oil is good for his coat), banana and apple, then freeze it.

In moderation, and not feeding from the table, I see nothing wrong with it.

They get a bit of whatever (ham, turkey or chicken) on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

A bits of cold cuts before and after their annual vet visits.Chat Icon

Here are some foods I give Katie:

Peanut butter
Turkey
Chicken
Lettuce
Apples
Raw Carrots
Raw Broccoli
Frozen Corn/Peas
Rice
Cheerios

Everything I give her is very bland and of course it's in moderation. Her faves are peanut butter, turkey and chicken. She starts crying when she smells them.

I make Brutus meatballs and carrots a few times a month and he usually gets a bite of whatever we are eating too. As long as his main diet is dog food and treats I see nothing wrong with it!

I am so bad.. Last night me, Mimi and Chico had vegetable crackers.. If I am having tostitos and salsa, they like the chips.. I gove my pups whatever they want in moderation.. If we are eating steak, I usally put the grease over their food as a treat and give them a piece of steak as well.. but they really enjoy chips.. Chat Icon

I have 2 cats...

One of them HATES people food!!! But my younger one LOOOOOOOOVES it!

We give him chicken, turkey, and he also enjoys licking up the residual milk in my cereal bowl in the morning (it's only a VERY LITTLE bit!)

Be careful, I give my dog people food too but I've heard that giving a dog raisins or grapes can cause them to have kidney failure. I don't know if it's true, my mom told me it, but considering she feeds her dog people food if SHE thinks its off limits it probably is.

Re: Controversial Topic....let's discuss!

Maybe once a month, DH will give the dogs a little big of his steak or whatever meat he is eating. He always cuts it up and puts it directly in their bowl (doesn't feed them from the table). FIL gave Teemu a piece of bacon about a year ago when we were visiting and Teemu wouldn't eat a full meal of dog food for weeks afterwards (guess it wasn't as good as the bacon), so we are pretty cautious about giving them tablefood now!
