Contractions question

How far apart did your doctor tell you your contractions should be before you head to the hospital? I have been having them every 7-10 minutes for about an hour now, but I don't want to waste my time going in for them to just send me home.

Re: Contractions question

I was told every 5 minutes for at least an hour? This site will help you time them: Contraction Master

But if you're not sure, call your OB's office and ask them what your doc recommends, he could have a different preference than mine!!

Re: Contractions question

5-1-1 rule. Contractions that are 5 minutes apart, lasting for 1 minute, for 1 hour. Good luck!! Sounds like it's almost time!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Contractions question

Mine said four minutes apart for two hours (but I had always heard four minutes apart for one hour).

Then she added that I could come in when the pain was so bad that I wanted an epidural.

ETA: What do the contractions feel like? I'm almost 38 weeks and I have no idea what I'm supposed to feel. Thanks!

Re: Contractions question

I'd call the dr. According to the card my OB gives out for appointments, it's the 5-1-1 rule for 1st time pregnancies.

For 2nd+ it's contractions every 7-10 minutes for 1 hour lasting 1 minute.

Re: Contractions question

the childbirth DVD I saw said 5 min apart for 1 hour IF IT IS YOUR FIRST CHILD, but you should call sooner (I believe it was something like 7-10 min apart) if it's your 2nd or 3rd... since subsequent labors progress much more quickly than the first.

HTH!
