Congrats, good luck...we don't need you anymore
So I call into work yesterday to let them all know that the baby & I are OK, and that we are coming in to get some things out of my office & get them to the person covering for me while I am on maternity. So I call & they inform me that we are having a huge department meeting & I should call into it. Ok no problem. Turns out they are eliminating a ton of positions in my department...INCLUDING MINE
So as of the end of my maternity, I am unemployed
Nice way to re-connect with work, huh?
They are trying to do the right thing... they are offering me a nice severance & are helping me file for unemployment.
The good news is I get 3 extra months with DS before I have to go back to work.

Ugh! That's horrible! I'm glad you have more time but post-partum is a sucky time to look for a job.
I'm so sorry.
What kind of position are you looking for?

If the department is eliminated (which it essentially is) then it is legal. HR already sought for comparable jobs within the company, but the whole Co. is downsizing.

What kind of position are you looking for?
Not sure. I am in publishing now, but lately I have been interested in working in collegiate administration. I need to feel like I am making a difference, KWIM? No real rewards in my (old) job.

Thanks guys. I am really not upset about it per se, although I am not thrilled about how it went down.

Wow.. I'm shocked for you!
Well maybe this was the push you needed to start looking into another field.
And on the flip side you do get an extra few months to be home with DS.
Good luck on the job hunt when the time comes.

There are a few of us who work in higher ed on here.
If I can help in any way, please let me know when you begin your search. At least where I work, it takes a while to actually hire someone, so you may want to start looking a bit in advance.
eta: FYI some schools have day cares on campus, too.
