Congestion Pricing Plan
What do you all think about the assembly not even voting on the congestion pricing plan?
I have to say, while many may disagree with me, I thought it was a good plan overall, could use some tweeking, but a good idea and a great way to enhance mass transit. I am really disgusted with Sheldon Silver (not for the first time, who keeps electing this man) and the rest of the assembly for not even voting upon it. Seems like a good way to duck the issue, voters will never know what their elected representatives thought.
Curious to see what others think.

I wasn't a huge fan of the plan...but, I can't believe they ignored it.

Re: Congestion Pricing Plan
The congestion plan was crap.
It would not have made Manhattan any less crowded because people would still be driving in. New Yorkers are thick-headed like that. Just like the rising prices of gas aren't detering people from driving their SUVs.
It would also make places like Long Island City and the general 59st bridge area a zoo.
How would they enforce this $8 charge at the 59st bridge for example? The traffic to the bridge approach is bad enough. Can you imagine what it would be like if they had to install tool booths there? Wow.
And what about people going through the tunnel? $5 for the tunnel and $8 for the congesion fee? $13 bucks? No way.

I agree with you. It was not perfect, but it was a good idea. I am very disappointed it was totally ignored. Hopefully the plan can be rewritten and brought up again. Its a shame they missed the federal funding though.

I agree as well...I was all for it...it would generate so much revenue for the city and somewhat help in cutting back the MTA fare increases...its successful in London, and I think it would be successful here as well...I don't think LIC would become a zoo and there is NO parking there to begin with. It would definitely serve as a deterrent for people to drive in to the city and even to close proximity in Queens.

Re: Congestion Pricing Plan
i am glad it didnt' go anywhere.
1. it would have hurt the people that really need to drive in. workers with equipment, truckers, etc. they are all already up to their eyes with tolls and gas prices, how can you hit them again? it's not effecting the corporate guys with the car service, they can afford it. it's the blue-collar people that were going to get screwed.
2. it would have a disaterous effect on the NYC local economy. the $8.00 or whatever it would be to drive in, would not be spent on that extra cup of coffee or the flowers from the newstands. people would limit additional spending once they're finally in the city.
3. the LIRR, metro-north, the subway are so congested as it is during rush hour. how the heck would they accommodate all those extra people? they can't even afford to have enough trains as it is....i highly doubt the MTA would have done anything additional to ease the crowded trains.
4. people are big-headed.... some would still drive in and it wouldn't really matter too much. how about once and for all improving the buses and trains and having taxi stands. that would really improve the congestion.

ITA! There are other ways to relieve congestion and hey how about having the MTA release some of their surplus $ And to collect this $8 won't there be a bottleneck for tolls? How does that relieve congestion? Obviously the people driving into the city are already spending a bundle in terms of parking expense there is no where to park or in tickets for double parking. There was no way the consumer was not going to pay for it in the end either.

I do agree that some provision needed to be in place for people who have to drive into the city for their jobs--people who do construction, plumbing, deliver products, etc.
I don't think this would kill NYCs economy. As some said, those who have $$$ will keep driving in regardless and will keep buying their coffee. I think it would deter some people from driving in though, one of my neighbors who drives every day was talking about taking the train if this went through. I don't understand why he drives in anyway--we're on a great train line and he works a 10 minute walk from Penn. But whatever, that's a whole other discussion.
One of the plan's biggest flaws in my mind, was not putting plans in effect to expand NYCs transit system. It would be more heavily used, and as some noted, it's overburdened already.
As I said earlier though, I am disgusted that the assembly couldn't even talk about it and put it to a vote and discussion. No alternatives have been presented. I agree with Bloomberg's thought that you can't bury your head in the sand and ignore this problem. Our assembly is soooo backwards.

I think the plan was to use the money form these added tolls to improve mass transit, but how long was that going to take & what was everyone supposed to do in the meantime?
It is odd that they just didn't vote on it at all though. . .

Re: Congestion Pricing Plan
as someone who lives literally around the corner from the last city disaster...the new Nets Arena, a stones through from both Flatbush AND Atlantic Aves and about 2 short miles from the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges I cannot tell you what a traffic NIGHTMARE this would have been for the people in the area to have tolls installed there or anywhere near these approaches.
there are regular street entrances to these bridges..not highways. toll boths on Tillary Street? it's unimaginable.
and then air quality of the area...I shudder to think of it with all those cars idling in ADDITIONAL traffic, spewing their poison to the people WALKING (b/c again..these are streets here, with pedestrian traffic)
I am so sick of the MTA crying poverty. SICK SICK SICK.
