Re: confused regarding speech develooment
I would go ahead with the evaluation. It can't hurt and even if he doesn't qualify you'll get a lot of piece of mind and some great information.
To those who say that early interventions are hyped up, you are probably fortunate enough to have a typically developing child. For the rest of us who don't I credit LIF for educating me on the topic and getting my DS help that he needed and still needs at almost 4 years old.
To OP, 22 months is still young and right now I wouldn't be overly worried. If you DS does qualify they'll likely make really good strides with him.

ita!
yes, every child is different and develops differently. and yes, probably more children are receiving services now than in the past. there are many reasons for this and this isn't the post to go into it. also, what you read in anyone's post is only a small piece of the total picture. the evaluations are available to those who have concerns. the OP had valid concerns and as a professional in that area, I agree that speech/lang should be evaluated. i'm glad EI does the evaluations for parents with concerns. so much can be gained from them even if a child doesn't qualify.

Re: confused regarding speech develooment
I agree with those who are saying an evaluation can't hurt.
I also don't see the point of waiting and being skeptical of the system. EI is not a conspiracy-a lot of the services are free to us so what on earth would they have to gain by saying there is need when there isn't????
I'm sure he is fine but the worst that can happen by getting an evaluation is they will tell you your DS is fine and you've "wasted" a morning. No biggie to me

Re: confused regarding speech develooment
People thought I was crazy for making the call...but it got to the point where he wanted to talk and couldn't.
At 24 mos, he had 7 everyday words. He wasn't approved since he tested high in all other areas. I begged them to figure out a way around this.
Other then him now speaking all the time...I learned so much from them. I am so chatty and wired a completely different way then my boy. He sits back, takes it all in, then sums things up when he feels like it.
His way of play is completely different then what I knew. They taught me the best way to interact with him.
good luck!

Re: confused regarding speech develooment
I really can't thank you all enough for taking the time to share your experiences, or give your advice.. it is truly appreciated!!!
You ladies are great, thank you again.
I should be hearing from someone this week to setup an appointment. We decided to move forward with the evaluation, it can't hurt to see where he is and to just gain some insight, advice, whatever to help push him along in any way we can (if needed)..
Thanks again.
Hugs to all!
