Compassion...

I was watching 'Tough Love' on VH1 (yeah yeah, crap TV, I know..) and it's about some guy who's a matchmaker for this group of women that have had failed relationships.

The matchmaker guy was talking to one of the women and he said something like...

"Most people think you can't be a compassionate person until you have a child..."

I just Chat Icon Makes me want to remove my Tivo season pass. Chat Icon

but would that mean that Steve--the matchmaker isn't capable of compassion because he doesn't have a kid or is married!

Of course it doesn't!

Don't you know that:

1- You are NOTHING until you are a mother

2- A Woman's sole purpose in life is to bear children

3- The only reason to get married is to start a family!!

Re: Compassion...

Compassion is a profound human emotion prompted by the pain of others. More vigorous than empathy, the feeling commonly gives rise to an active desire to alleviate another's suffering. It is often, though not inevitably, the key component in what manifests in the social context as altruism

So, since I don't have children, I must not have had compassion as I was bathing my mother and changing her diapers as she was dying of cancer. Sitting up with her all night because she was hallucinating. Doling out her pain meds and making sure that she could breathe. Turning her every two hours so that she would not develop pressure sores, and when she invariably did, having to clean and dress them WITHOUT causing my mom extra distress.
Yeah, I don't have compassion because I don't have children.

I think he got it way wrong.

Same. DH asked me, why do we watch this cr@p.. I said so I can watch people fight and go crazy.

The matchmaker's statement made me want to delete the season pass, then I saw the previews for next week and I couldn't bring myself to do it. I love when people throw electronics. Chat Icon

Re: Compassion...

steve wasnt talking about women when he made that comment- he was referring to men who do not truly understand compassion until they had had a child.

It's still the same sentiment.

If he was talking to a man I'm sure he would have changed it to be 'a woman can't understand...'

Exactly- I'm not so offended by the woman vs man that it was addressed to as I am by the sentiment that PEOPLE (either sex) can't have compassion unless they have had a child.
Stupid statement.

Re: Compassion...

I am sorry to crash but this is the stupidest comment I have ever heard.

Before I became a mother, I was (and still am) a compassionate daughter, sister, friend, wife, granddaughter, teacher and overall person. Having my daughter didnt make me more compassionate, it just made me compassionate to one more person in my life. That comment just makes me so mad!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I guess they aren't. I suppose this could be one more stigma we can add to our empty childlees lives. Chat Icon Chat Icon

ITA. If being a parent made you compassionate, there would be no such thing as child abuse.
