Cloth Diaper Mommies

I'm considering switching to the other side, from DD. What diapers do you use and what do you recommend a newbie to start out with? DS is 14wks. Any tips?

I'm a cloth moomy and have been for almost 3 years- at one point i had 3 in cloth

the easiest and cheapest way to start is prefolds. i would get about 16-24 regular size prefolds, 2 snappi clips, 3-4 covers, then 2-4 bum genuis one size, two large wet bags, one small wet bag

My night time diaper is the bum geuis one size - it grow with the child - plus wicks moisture away from the skin. Once stuffed it works like a disposable

For day time I use the prefolds and then use the snappi - it is a y shaped peice with ace bandage clips, then i put a cover over it

I have thirsties and bummis sized covers. I like them because they are velcro. This is good if you are going to have more kids. mine are in really great shape and are their 2nd and 3rd kid (i have twins)

Another good cover is the flip covers - they are snap covers and one size. you can also use the flip inserts but i prefer the prefolds they hold poop better

I do use the flip disposable liners sometimes when we are travelign because they break down faster than diapers

use any normal size trash can and put wet bag in. Then when you wash you just dump the wet bag into the washing machine and the bag too.

I do a cold pre soak and then wash on hot. i have used coutnry save, bum genuis, pryrex free and clear, all free and clear detergent without a problem. My only issue came with tide free and clear

when you get them, you need to wash and dry them 3 times on hot water to get them ready to use

once ou get in the process it is so easy and your like disposables are not necessary.

i do keep one package of disposbles around for when i am behind on laundry or they look better in a disposable with their outfit.

if you want to use wipes, i used the prince lionheart wipe warmer and cloth wipes

No longer in diapers, but when DS was we used mainly prefolds. You need at least 2 dozen to do wash every other day or every two days. I used thirsties wraps and flip wraps. I also used the snappies as well. Get a bunch (about 6). Wraps get about six as well (one size wraps will save you the most cash as they grow with baby) I also use bum genius and smartipants for nighttime as for going out of the house. I exclusively washed using all free and clear. No issues. I too did a cold wash and then a hot wash for diapers. I also dried my diapers in the dryer the entire time.

I had two large wet bags and two small ones. Used a regular trash can (it could have been a laundry bin) to put the wet bag in.

It can be very overwhelming here are my simple suggestions....

1-Get a Hefty trash can with a lid- You will put a pail liner in this. You can buy them online. I have Planet Wise brand and I love it. Roughly $18 for pail liner. I suggest 2 so you can have a clean one while you wash diapers
2-Travel Wet Bag. I have a Planet Wise wet/dry bag as well and love it. This is where you will put the dirty diapers when you are on the go. I also have a kangacare zippered wet bag and LOVE it as well!
3- Laundry. I would buy some Original Tide and use that. I have an old top loader and I use 2T for 18 diapers. The laundry routine is a personal thing and takes time. The basic is Cold Rinse with no detergent, then a HOT wash WITH detergent. Most machines have all rinses on cold so you're good there, and do an extra cold rinse. Check in this last rinse and if you see bubbles do another cold rinse. Once a month I add RLR to my Hot wash cycle to help keep the diapers clean and love it. Tumble dry low or hang on the line
4- Diapers. Prefold and covers are the cheapest, but I prefer pocket diapers and All In Ones (AIOS). We love our Rumperooz pockets and our DryBees AIO. I suggest doing laundry every 2-3 days so get approx. 20 diapers. I would also get some hemp inserts for when they get older. For my 6 month old we do a rump with a hemp insert and a microfiber insert. He stays dry 12 hrs. Also buy cd safe cream. We love Grandma Els and Booty Balm.

I suggest diaperswappers.com for used diapers You can try lots of brands and styles. My DD is 2.5 and wears the rumps as well so I love the one size diapers best. Good luck and fm anytime!!!

Oh and when you start solids buy a diaper sprayer. Best invention ever!

I cloth diapered DS for the first 9 months of his life. We used gdiapers, you can find them at Babies R Us. They use disposable liners and I started with 3-4 of the gpants. We loved them. The only reason we switched to Pampers was because by 9 months DS was on all table food, and his poops were getting messier. We were also out and about much more and he was sleeping through the night so peeing more in his diaper overnight.

Cheapest is definitely prefolds and covers. I generally use those when we're hanging out around the house. I do stick a fleece liner in as well since my little ones have sensitive skin. I use green mountain diaper prefolds. They're great! Snappis as well, and my preference are thirsties and gen-y covers.

When companies around or we're out I opt for my pocket diapers. I like the fuzzibunz perfect fit. Size medium is great since they fit the longest and aren't too bulky. I also have blueberry pockets but they're expensive and not my favorite. I like bg 3.0 for at night, they have 4.0s now but the 3s fit my little ones better. I have 2 for at night.

I have a small garbage can with a lid, 2 large wet bags and 2 medium zipper wet bags for outings.

I do a cold soak cycle with no detergent, a hot wash with a little all free and clear, 2 rinse cycles the first with about 1/2 cup vinegar to sanitize them. I try to air dry the covers so e PUL lasts but I don't alwayss.

FYI they have great resale value too! I've been selling the ones off that I don't use any more and I get a decent amount of money for them.
