I was given clomid through an RE and was not required to temp first.

No, I went on CD3 and they took blood. Then I began on CD 5 due to scheduling. I never temped.

I had to temp for a few months to make sure I was ovulating. It was also so he could decide which days to take the clomid

If you're being seen by an RE (and imo those are the only ones who should be prescribing clomid), then they do their own monitoring to determine if you're ovulating. So no, they don't require you to temp
