Chromosomal Abnormalities

An acquaintance of mine just found out her baby could have down syndrome.

What would you do? Would you keep your baby if you found out your baby had chromosomal abnormalities - down syndrome?

TTC is so stressful. Whenever I think about TTC, I get scared and worried about everything and anything that could possibly go wrong.

i think you dont know the answer to that unless you're in that situation.
you can think you would do this or that but if you're in that position it might be the opposite.

I agree with the previous poster, you never know what you are going to do, until you are in that situation. And it is a tough decision to make.

But you said your friend 'could' have a baby with an abnormality...I hope that she does all the testing possible that she can so she can make an informed decision.

The tests during pregnancy give percentages. One of the things that got me through worrying was someone on LIF said, there is a 10 % chance the baby has something, but also a 90% chance there is nothing wrong.

If it was a confirmed abnormality I would terminate the pregnancy - even if it is Downs.

I would keep the baby, no questions asked. My baby is my baby... terminating would never and could NEVER be an option for me.

Also, many times these tests are NOT accurate. A friend of mine was told that the baby did NOT have down's and was born with Down's anyway and took them completely by surprise. there are things like false positives and the like.

Also, many of these tests actually increase your chances of miscarrying because you break the amniotic sac.

My cousin has Downs, so of course I would go through with the pregnancy.

I'm assuming she had the ultrascreen rather than an amnio or CVS test. The CVS and amnio are 100% accurate.

That is definately a question I would have to decide at the time. I suspect I would keep it though. I dont know if I could abort my baby.


I have heard of 3 women within the last year who went thru all the testing and were told their baby had a very high % of being born with downs. All of those babies turned out okay !

I have decided I will not be having those tests. Those tests seem to cause more stress than anything helpful.

Hi all,

Sorry to crash....dont even know how I got here...wishful thinking I guess from someone who is done having babies..

Anyway...

I have a child with Down Syndrome. Mosaic Down Syndrome actually...basically that means she is half Down Syndrome and half "normal"...

I got remarried in 06 and DH and I decided to have one more. Before becoming pregnant with DS I kind of thought that I would not have continued a pregnancy should I have another child with a chromosomal anomaly or another severe birth defect. (Personally as a PP pointed out Down Syndrome is really not bad in the grand scheme of things they are great kids who live fulfillling lives)..

BUT..then you get pregnant and things change....

We decided soon after becoming pregnant that we would continue our pregnancy regardless of any issues with the baby....it was still our child...issues or not.

Perhaps I have a different view on things b/c not only do I already have a child with Down Syndrome but I also lost a set of twins a year before she was born. They lived for an hour. Bringing home that beautiful little baby girl was such a gift...I would take that over the alternative any day...

Point..what is my point...I guess my point is that this is something that you just cant play "what if" until you are faced with it...you simply just dont know what you would do.
