Christening Gift for Niece

I'm looking to give cash. I have no clue what an appropriate amount is.

I don't think that it matters that it's at a catering hall with a cocktail hour, 4 hour reception, and Venetian hour. ?? But maybe I'm wrong and need to give more.

my son's christening was in june. I'd say the average gift was $100. Some people gave $50 and a few gave $200 but aside from the grandparents $100 was definitely "the number"

I'd say $250 is more than generous.

Apparently I am cheap compare to previous posters Chat Icon but I am OK with that. I give $50 usually.for my nephew I think I gave $75 maybe a $100.

Also to me it doesn't matter where they have the party my job is not to cover me and my families plate and pay for the party.

Re: Christening Gift for Niece

I want to add that I was the godmother for the first nephew- so I felt I should give a little more generous of a gift.
Then when the second was christened I felt I couldn't give less just because I wasn't the godmother for him.
I also only have one sibling and she only has 2 kids so it's not like I have a ton of nieces /nephews.
If we had a huge family we wouldn't have been able to give that much all the time.
Also, my gift had nothing to do with the venue- they had it at a small place, simple sit down dinner, nothing over the top.
Definitely don't base your gift on the fact that they are having what sounds more lavish than my wedding for a baptism.

For a niece $300-$500. In my Italian family that is the going rate anyway. But in any case I would give much more to a niece or nephew then I would to any other family member or close friend's Christening I might attend.

Christening Gift for Niece

OMG - I wish I was in your families (or maybe not cause I could never afford it - lol)

In my family, $100 is standard for nieces and nephews christenings.

Re: Christening Gift for Niece

To answer some questions, it's my husband and me. We aren't the godparents.

So should I be covering my plate for a ridiculous over-the-top party?

I decided to pick up a pair of 14k gold earrings to go with the cash.

My husband is firm at $100, but I think it should be more. Maybe I'll just put more in before sealing it!

with all these additional details, i completely agree with your husband. earrings and $100 is a wonderful, generous gift.

she's your niece, you'll have many more opportunities to give her gifts as she grows Chat Icon

You should absolutely NOT be covering your plate.
They chose to go over the top.
What you are giving is fine

You give what you want then. You asked for opinions, in my culture and family Christenings are very big deals. I'm curious to know what makes the party over the top, though??? Is it black tie only? Full band instead of DJ? just curious, that's all!

For all my nieces and nephews that I was a godparent or not, I have always given $300 or a gift that was equivalent to that amount.

No need to get snarky. You're right. I am looking for opinions, hence the reason I asked the question. I didn't say I was going to do what I wanted anyway. Not sure what that line is all about.

I added more information to answer some questions posted by other posters. I simply explained who was going and included what my husband (his niece by the way) thought was appropriate. I however don't think $100 is enough in addition to her jewelry.

And yes, a SIX hour catered affair, at a wedding hall, is over the top for a christening.

I've never been to a christening but I think $100 is more than enough even more so since you added earrings. I agree, it appears over the top, jmo

In my (Greek) family, christenings are usually done at catering halls or nice restaurants. Just the norm in our culture.
Given what you posted I would maybe give 150-200 plus the earrings.

I wasn't being snarky and I'm sorry you took it like that. I just wanted to know what made it over the top. I simply said to you do what you want, which is pretty much everybody's answer. In my family Christenings are done at a catering hall , but typically for 5 hours, not 6. Nobody considers that over the top as I am an Italian Catholic and Christenings are very important. Most people don't have rooms in their houses for 100+ people , and that is just inviting close family. Greeks and Spanish tend to do the same thing too. Just because it's not what you like doesn't mean you should bash other people cultures and traditions. Take it down a notch.
