choosing your pediatrician

did anyone NOT interview their pediatrician?

I have a group that i want to use based on my dr recommendation and their location.
Should I call them up just to chat and see about meeting with them or can i just put their info down on the hospital papers when the time comes?

Also, we are Chat Icon so i am not certain if I should meet with a male and/or female in the group (if its a boy i would probably want a male dr and if its a girl i would probably want a female dr)...so would i meet with 2 of them?

any insight is appreciated

i didnt. i was planning on it but then DD was born 7 weeks early. she was born 2 weeks before my interview was scheduled for. i was clearly leaning towards this PED based on recs from here. as soon as i called her and told her about my daughters birth she was very helpful and i knew i made the right choice. we haven't looked back since.

i also dont think the doctors gender matters at all, but thats personal opinion. we were team green too and had a girl and went with a female PED, but it just worked out that way, it wasnt a plan. ive seen both make and female OB/gyns and REs and my male RE is pretty much one of my favorite people in the world. to me it doesnt matter AT ALL the gender - what matters is the care level and bedside manner. but again, personal preference.

thanks!
I personally dont care about gender either...I used to see a female ob and during the pregnancy i have to rotate...and i actually now prefer a male. but DH says growing up he hated having to see a female dr for all of his appts. granted this is years down the line so i guess it wouldnt matter

hmm i def never thought about it that way! i had a male ped as a child and i dont remember it being more awkward because of that - maybe slightly around puberty...hmmm interesting!!

choosing your pediatrician

we did one interview and i found it to be a waste of time...we didn't even go with that doc because of location. We went with our current practice based on recommendations, no interview and have been totally happy!

i decided to call the practice to see if they take my insurance...figured that was a good starting point. They do and the receptionist was SO helpful! I had a chat with her about the doctors in the practice and she recommended i come in for a 15 minute consultation so i scheduled one.

The best advice I received was from one of the ob's at my old practice. He said not to waste our time interviewing a pediatrician. You are with your child the whole time they are there. It's not like daycare where you leave your child. If you don't like the pediatrician, switch. It was helpful to not have to worry about interviewing pediatricians along with everything else we were worrying about.

i can understand that - however, cant it be a hassle to have to transfer the doctors records and immunizations if you end up not liking them?

Fortunately, the pediatrician we used we liked. Get some recommendations but if you have to transfer...people do it all the time. You get the records and change drs.

choosing your pediatrician

I used the one my sister uses. I figured if she likes them, they are close and they take my insurance!

Re: choosing your pediatrician

We went off recs, location, hours, etc. we called and they said they we don't need to meet them. Some practices require it though. We just had to list them as the ped in the hospital and they would come see the babies. I met all in the hospital while they were making rounds. Male/female didnt matter to me. I grew up with a male dr and never had an issue so I doubt my girls will either.
