Choosing insurance
My husband is starting a new job for LIRR. We need to choose benefits he can choose the NYSHIP plan PPO or an empire plan HMO. The NYSHIP plan is no cost to us and the HMO empire plan is $232 weekly. I thought NYSHIP is the better insurance but now that I see it's no cost to us, I am wondering if it is good? I was and still currently carry the benefits. My employer had Aetna and just switched to Cigna. Our out of pocket expenses have gotten out of hand lately and now Cigna has so many more coverage exclusions

Re: Choosing insurance
My understanding is that with a PPO you don't need referrals to see specialists, while with an HMO you do. I am not sure if that is still the case but we have a PPO and it's great..
However you would have to compare the plans side by side to see what the differences are and what is covered on one vs the other, the differences in copays, deductibles etc. His employer should be able to provide all the details on each as well as a comparison

We have Empire nyship and it's excellent. Accepted by most, no referrals required, no deductibles, etc. Never have an issue having anything covered.

Choosing insurance
I have NYSHIP through my new job (not free though it's over $200 a paycheck) and have had issues with doctors not taking it. Actually, none of any of our doctors take it but all of our doctors are in the city so I think that's why. My bigger concern is out of area hospitals not taking it. Not sure about every hospital in the city (NYU and MSK definitely take it) but I'm highly unlikely to use a LI hospital for anything other than the ER.

Re: Choosing insurance
NYSHIP!! It's the best.
Hospitalization with this insurance is through BlueCross/Blue Shield. DH had to go to the ER in Hawaii once and there was no issue. BC/BS paid it no problem.
