Choking/gagging
DS is 6 weeks old tomorrow and he does this disturbing choking/gagging thing while BFing. It is not like a little gagging thing, but a full on choking where it seems like he stops breathing for a couple of seconds. he doesn't turn blue or anything, but it is scary. He has done it for the last week, but doesn't do it for every feeding. I have an appointment for a check up with the ped on tuesday, but is this reflux? It scared the crap out of my mom and DH when they saw him do it.

Re: Choking/gagging
DD is 2 1/2 weeks and has also done this on occasion... I mentioned it to my pediatrician and he said it is normal due to their mucus still. I've found that a way to make it easier is to have DD propped up a little while eating almost like she is half sitting up so the milk goes down easier.

Ditto to everything that Tiffany said... It scared the bejeezus out of me to see K doing that, but she has calmed down a LOT in the last few weeks, and only does it on occasion. What Tiffany said is very helpful when they eat... try if you can to keep her propped up more, and if you see her starting to gag, pull the nip from her mouth, and full on sit her up... she will start to cough a little, but she shouldn't stop breathing as much as b4.

Re: Choking/gagging
I followed your advice about the propping him up and it worked. He didn't choke/gag. However, after I BF him this monrning, I put him in the swing and went downstairs to make coffee. As I am downstairs, I can hear that distnict loud choking noise. For the first time, it really scared the crap out of me and I sprinted up the stairs. He was totally calm sitting in the swing and breathing a little heavy. I just wish it would stop. Obviously he is fine and can deal with it if I am not there to pat him on the back, but it still scares me, especially because this time it didn't occur during feeding, but a couple of minutes after.

Re: Choking/gagging
DS does the same thing & it is VERY scary!! I agree with the above post about prping him up & taking nipple out of mouth. He has gotten alot better with it & does it less often.
I wound up buying the angel care moniter for peace of mind beacause I was so woried about him choking in his sleep. Its been very helpful

Re: Choking/gagging
mrsej... it is starting to sound like reflux. that's what was happening with DD. the choking is cuz the food is coming up b/c their stomachs aren't sealing well.
don't be worried... the doc just had me put 1/2 tsp of rice cereal per ounce of either form or BM in DD's bottles and feed her that way instead!
it has gotten sooooooooooooooo much better with the RC!

Read her last post... this time it didn't happen during the feeding - it was after she was done and had already gotten to another level of the house!

Re: Choking/gagging
I would definitely mention it to the dr. DS did this as well and I kept blaming it on laziness during feeding on his part but it seems that it's all part and parcel of GERD.

Have you tried the football hold? This will keep him more upright as other posters suggested.

Re: Choking/gagging
Sometimes I try different holds, I should take notice and see if it makes a difference. Once it happened when he was sucking on a pacifier. I thought it could be reflux. It is such a weird choking noise...I wish I could videotape it to show the doctor so she doesn't just think I am overreacting. I usually totally mellow which is why my family is also getting a little nervous.

I had to start with Kristina when she was 3 weeks old. Her ped told me 1/2 tsp per oz of form or BM.
