Children's Bday party gift debate...

After having a conversation with a friend, I was surprised to hear that she does not send a gift when she responds no to a children's party.. We are referring to our friend's children..not family. I am curious with what everyone else does...isn't it just proper etiquette to send a gift?

Re: Children's Bday party gift debate...

I don't have tons of experience with children's birthday parties but when we had DD's 1st bday only one couple who didn't come sent a gift. We had several other people not come and we didn't receive a gift. While I agree it is proper etiquette to send a gift to any event regardless if you attend (bridal shower, baby shower, weddings, etc) many people don't seem to follow etiquette these days. It's sad and embarrassing.

Some people respond no because they don't have money for a gift.

If its family or a close friend we will usually still send a gift. If its a school mate, then no I don't.

Re: Children's Bday party gift debate...

If we cannot make a friend's party, I will give them a gift the next time we see them.

If it is a classmate party, I do not send a gift.

We have never gotten a gift from a no rsvp. We have if the person said yes then couldn't attend (bc they were sick or emergency came up).

Re: Children's Bday party gift debate...

If it's close family or a close friend then I send a gift. If not, no gift is sent.

I would not expect a gift from anyone who rsvp'd no to any of my parties, close or not. It would actually be a surprise to me if one was sent.

Children's Bday party gift debate...

DS's 1st birthday we had several people respond no and did not receive gifts from them. We had people respond yes then not come, we did not receive gifts from them. We had people come to the party and did not receive gifts from them. I don't know what the "proper" protocol" is in this type of situation, but I would always rather just have people than gifts. But that's me.

Re: Children's Bday party gift debate...

For us it depends on if the child came to my childs party. So if they were at last party and gave a gift I will give gift even if we can't make it.

Thanks for the feedback..I never realized that after having my LO, it would open up to a world of invites for kiddie parties...I never made the invite list when I was childless!!

I do not send a gift to classmates parties if we respond no, nor have I ever received one for my DC for those who responded no.
