children traveling alone?

my son is 14.

we're toying with the idea of him visiting my dad in the summer.

would they allow me to go to the gate to wait with him until the plane boards?

I doubt it. I don't think they'll let you through security without a ticket, but I could be wrong.

they won't. but i think you can ask for an airline employee to escort him to the gate and make sure he gets on the plane (not that you don't trust him but for peace of mind).

It may depend on the airline, but I know this is do-able on American. You'll fill out a form at the airport that will allow you to get a boarding pass to get through security.

Check the airline's website -- there will be a section on unaccompanied minors that should explain the rules.

US airways also allows a parent to wait at the gate with an unaccompained minor - but might matter on age

Check with the airline. I was allowed to accompany a disabled friend (who is an adult) to the gate and wait there until she boarded the flight.
