Childbirth Class
I'm due Aug 20th and I'm just getting around to this
LIJ condensed session next available date (they only do once a month) is Aug 12th.
I really need a place where I can bang it out in one day. We don't have the time to go to multiple classes.
I asked on the pregnancy board and got New Baby Belly but I don't think they are open anymore.
I'm in Levittown. Oh and I'll be wanting drugs
Can you help a girl out?
TIA

Childbirth Class
Not that you asked, but personally I would save my time and money - I personally don't think you need it (especially if you want the drugs). The nurses will tell you what to do when it is time. I took a Bradley Method class (wanted to go natural but was induced) and I honestly don't think it helped me at all.

To be honest I'm not really wanting to do the class. I feel it's going to be waste of our money but I'm getting shit from my IL's about it

Re: Childbirth Class
We took a 3 part class through Winthrop/Destination Maternity
Did it help? yea, a little. It gave me an idea of how the whole process goes. From what happens when your water breaks and you get to the hospital, to how they do an epi, to various type of drugs you can get, what to expect while you're in L&D suite, and then onto various breathing techniques. I knew i'd be getting an epi, but figured breathing techniques couldn't hurt to know because no matter how much you prepare, you never know what is going to happen.
It wasn't super necessary, but i was glad we did it. So when the craziness of going into labor actually happened.. i was ok with it all because i knew was supposed to happen.
it's preference really..

DITTO! Let me tell you something. I was getting ready to push and the nurse said to me- did you take a child birth class? I said no. She goes ok I will tell you how to push. And she said, "you push like you are taking a huge shit!" (I swear she used those words- her and I had established a great rapor while I was in labor- all comfy with my epi!). She was an older woman too! I told her I was a PRO at that so bring it on!
Well after that and a few more brief ( and more traditional!) instructions, I pushed my DD out.
No need for a class. I doubt anything I learned in there would have stuck in my mind when I was in the throws of pushing anyway! I was too busy screaming at my DH, the Dr, the nurse, anyone who was in th room. And throwing the wet rags my DH was lovingly placing on my forehead- on the ground!

Re: Childbirth Class
I don't have a suggestion on where to take a class, I delivered in Southampton, which is Guam compared to where you are delivering...but I wanted to give my two cents.
I knew I wanted drugs but I was really nervous and am the type of person that likes to know exactly what is going to happen....so my doctor suggested I take a class. I took the one the hospital was offering and it completely calmed every nerve I had.
I knew exactly what was going to happen, got a tour of the hospital, met some nurses, and was even given examples of things that could go wrong and what exactly the hospital would do if those things happened to me.
I left the class feeling like I could completely handle whatever situation was thrown my way, I wasn't scared about labor at all.
Just my two cents, if you don't want to take the class, then don't

Re: Childbirth Class
I knew I wanted an epidural also and I didn't take a class.. it was fine!
I ended up needing a c-section anyway (but that's a different story).
I don't think you need a class at all! Especially if you don't want to

Re: Childbirth Class
If you can't take a class, at least watch the Laugh and Learn video or some other video. As for wanting drugs, I totally understand. I went into labor both times asking for drugs the minute I walked in the door. However, nothing ever went according to plan both times.
Learning the breathing techniques (whether you take a class or watch a video) helped me when my epi didn't work on half my body the first time. With the second baby, the breathing techniques saved me because I was too far along for an epi and was forced to go drug-free. I guess what I'm trying to say, is even if you plan on getting the drugs (and may they work better for you than they did for me!), at least learn some breathing techniques in case things don't go according to plan.

i watched the free one from babycenter (click here ).
i prob won't be taking a "real" childbirth class anywhere. might do newborn care or something - but honestly, i'm more interested in meeting the couples than i am in the class itself

I am suprised by that. I did Bradley and was induced and I don't think I would have made it without the Bradley class. I didn't get an epi and had a kind of long winded induction. We weren't able to use pit.. whole other story.
I would think that if you are in a rush, I wouldn't worry too much. There is very little they can teach you in one day. Maybe hire a doula to help you get through it?

My induction was 48 hours and I was pumped with pitocin - no way I could have done it without the epi! We learned all about the interventions in the class, but when you are in the hospital in labor, (I felt) you have very limited choices and do what the doctor tells you is best for you and your baby.
Every birth experience is different, but I felt that the nurses really walked me through the whole process, and I would have been totally fine without the class.
I also think every instructor is different, and maybe mine just wasn't that helpful!

Re: Childbirth Class
If you're looking to have an epi and have fully informed yourself on what an epi is and potential side effects then I would think you're ok without a class.
Perhaps just visit the Lamaze International website to learn about other birth interventions that may be introduced- episiotomy, types of monitoring, forceps, vacuum ect. The more you know ahead of time the better.
I'm sure the nurses will be very helpful with pushing.

I didn't do a class and had the epidural (best thing ever, btw!). I totally don't think a class is necessary. Nurses will tell you when to push and if you get a good epidural no breathing exercises necessary!

Does NSUH offer it? I took it at LIJ and while most if it wasnt helpful the breathing did help until I got the epi but you can probably just watch a video for that.

No need for a class. The nurses in the hospital will guide you and tell you exactly what to do. Don't worry about your IL's they had their kid now you're having yours.

Yep this. Altho I went to a sort of class my pedi office had at Huntington Medical Group. LOL I gave birth a week later so go figure. That was more or less about pregnancy than birth for new parents. So it was all old news to me.
I never did a class Never visited the hospital. Neither caused any trouble at all.
Very glad I didn't waste the time or money. I had better things to do, like shop for the baby! Set up her room, get ready for my Dad to visit, etc.

Re: Childbirth Class
the most benificial class i took was with my second- it was a breastfeeding class. If you plan on BFing, id take one. The lamaze class...you can probably rent a movie from the library and do it at home. The dr & nurses tell you how to breathe when you are in the hospital.
