child led weaning and unassisted child birthing
Wow, i've been frequenting Mothering.com, it's a web chat board similar to LIF but much slower and not as user friendly... anyhow, i looked up all the chat forums and came across a few boards that were pretty interesting.
I didn't know there is a huge community of women out there that have completely unassisted child birth- meaning no midwives, no nothing! they just find a spot in the house and labor and give birth with just their SO and maybe a family relative present..
Also came across another chat forum where there are women that let their children wean themselves from breastmilk- so it's whenever the child chooses to stop breastfeeding. that means they can vary from toddler to age 9 or 10
i just thought it was very interesting and shocking of course...
there is a whole world outside of mine! it's mind boggling!

OMG, both things are too out there for me. I'm sorry, I want medical professionals and even though I'm not BF, if I were to, my kid would NOT be on the boob at 9 years old. Nasty, sorry!

Yeah I'm all about the all-natural birthing process. I'm having the baby at home but with 3 midwives and a few RN's in attendance!!
I would NEVER do it alone.
I know a lot of women breast feed longer than 24 months and while thats cool, I think 8 or 9 is a bit ridiculous.
But to each their own... thats what makes the world go round!

Re: child led weaning and unassisted child birthing
yeah i am still shocked... the most common age for child led weaning was 6/7. one mom said has been doing it for 10 years!
and there are women that tandem breastfeed- meaning they will breastfeed their toddler or grown child (age 6/7/8 are grown children in my eyes) at the sametime as their infant. that's two at a time!
i am not judging, i am just so shocked!

Re: child led weaning and unassisted child birthing
I saw a program on Discovery Health about unassisted births - I was blown away. I can't imagine how I would feel if somethign were to go wrong and we lost the baby. The women kept saying how women have been delivering babues for 100s of year unassisted, but I really don't agree with that, in most "societies" or groups of people there was someone or a group of people who had been trained to be what we would consider a Dr. someone with more experience than others.
With the BF, that's a totally personal choice to me, I think 8, 9, 10 is a bit old, but that's me. I plan on BFing for about 1- 1.5 years, I know other women who say 6 months tops. Whatever floats your boat.

Yeah its amazing that women can be comfortable enough to deliver their own babies. I am TRAINED to deliver babies and have delivered quite a few myself but there is no way I could deliver my own.....
But, in some countries they do it! Amazing, but scary at the same time! And thats coming from me the "crunchy granola" of the bunch!

Wow. That is amazing. I can understand wanting a natural birth, but what is wrong with having an experienced person attending? Even in the next room?
And as far as the breast feeding thing: I have spoken to someone who was weened so that he is old enough to remember breast feeding and I think it kinda messes with his head as an adult.

Do the people who have the unassissted births see a dr. or midwife for prenatal care? I can't see either approving of this.
As for the BF, well to each her own. I can't imagine a 10 year old who wants to BF though.

Good for them. It is not for me to pass judgment.
Not good for me. I would want every intervention known to man at my fingertips whether I use it or not.

Re: child led weaning and unassisted child birthing
1. If you are crazy enough to give birth unassisted, then more power to ya. With all the medical technology out there, I'm not sure why someone would jeopardize the health of their newborn in such a way. Maybe for religious reasons?
2. Breastfeeding until 9 or 10 years old? That's just abusive in my mind. PERSONALLY, I'll bf until my baby has received the proper antibodies and nutrients that he/she needs and PERSONALLY, won't go past 6 or so months. That's my own personal decision. It's creepy and highly inappropriate, I THINK, to breastfeed a child who can speak. "Mommy, can I have milk?" Come on. Really.

I'll judge then. Breastfeeding a grown child is inappropriate and, as another poster mentioned, it messes with their heads. If it for some reason DOESN'T mess with their heads, then let their friends or parents of friends get a hold of this tidbit of info. These poor kids won't live it down for the rest of their lives.

to each their own.. but soo not for me ..
I wanted the doctor and whole lot of staff their when my dd was born and same this time around. And for bfing 9-10 years old is just a bit too long for me.. heck once they are able to say milk.. that would be too long for me.

There was a show on recently about two girls who still breastfed and they were maybe 6 and 9? It was disturbing to me.

I saw that!! How disturbing. It is on You tube. Those girls where obsessed with their mothers boobs. I think that is creepy.
Yes, people have been having unassisted births for years, but they had no choice. As someone else said, even though they may of had unassisted births they usually had a midwife around or at least someone in the community who was somewhat trained in birth. I'm sure not all did it alone. If you are going to have a home birth, you should have midwives there. I think these women are being stupid. Something could happen to that baby or the mother and no one would know what to do. A Midwife at least has been through difficult situations and could help.

No, usually they don't seek professional prenantal care. They will do somethings such as check the heartbeat on their own if they feel necessary.
I've read those boards before. I know I could never feel comfortable delivering my baby without a midwife or some kind of assistance present. I believe in natural child birth & if this VBAC goes well I may try for a homebirth next time around, but I am just too much of a nervous nelly to do it all on my own.
As for breastfeeding, I nursed my daughter until she was a little over 2. It was a combination of me gently encouraging her to wean & her losing interest on her own. I am a huge promoter of breastfeeding, but I think I would feel uncomfortable personally much past age 2.5. I know I certainly wouldn't be comfortable with age 9!
To each his own I suppose!

Re: child led weaning and unassisted child birthing
WOW! I can not believe that some women would allow breastfeeding until 9 or 10 years old!! I always thought if the child could ask for a burger & fries then, maybe the need for breast milk wasn't quite appropriate- too each is own i guess!? Unassisted childbirth in this day and age is a completely foreign idea to me .. so much can go wrong, why not have a natural child birth in a hospital with all necessary amenitites if needed. ( And this coming from a woman who was born @ home!)

I'm not going to start a big debate but natural childbirth assisted by professionals such as CNM (certified nurse midwives who are Nurse practitioners) at home is quite safe and done all over the world.
I think this topic was more about Unassisted Childbirth with no trained medical professional.

Re: child led weaning and unassisted child birthing
I'm all for safe intervention-free hospital and home births, but I don't buy into the whole UC (unassisted) birth movement. I have read those boards and, while most of those women are really well educated and know what warning signs to look for, I think there is a reason why in most cultures throughout the ages women have had help giving birth.
As for child-led weaning, most of what I have read indicates that a child will wean on his own between 3 and 4 years old. I'm all for extended breastfeeding, but I do think there comes a point where it is developmentally inappropriate to breastfeed a child and I certainly think a 6 year old has reached that point.
I do want to caution people about judging extended breastfeeding though (and no, I'm not talking about breastfeeding 6 year olds -- I'm talking about those who go beyond 12 months). The fact is that breastmilk continues to provide important benefits well beyond 6 months. The AAP recommends breastfeeding for at least a year and the WHO recommends breastfeeding for at least 2 years.
I'm not saying you have to do it, but please reserve judgement on those of us who breastfeed our toddlers -- it is a healthy and developmentally appropriate thing to do even if it's not something you want to do.

Re: child led weaning and unassisted child birthing
Wow! I had no idea some women breastfeed that long! That's astonishing. I can't imagine the social ramifications for that!!
As for unassisted births, I know women have done it for hundreds of years, but there were also many more deaths hundreds of years ago. I understand wanting a midwife, and wanting a more natural birth as long as there are experienced professionals that know how to take care of both mother and baby in an emergency. FH brought up birthing centers when we first found out, and my mother freaked because when I was born, I was not breathing and she was so happy to be in a hospital where they could save me. I don't know much about birthing centers, but I bet they are equipped for emergencies and so are midwives and others that do home births. Unassisted just seems crazy to me--why not have someone experienced there?? Personally, I feel safest in a hospital.

Yeah, when I was planning my homebirth mothering was a GREAT resource but some of the people there are so wacky and out there I couldn't keep going there.
