Checking in
Just checking in to let you know we are doing great. Baby Taylor is in NICU since she is only 33 weeks as of today. She is breathing on her own and maintaining her temp. She is on a feeding tube since she wont start sucking until 34 weeks. She is however practicing on a pacifier but the challenge will be sucking, breathing and swallowing at the same time. She lost 10z so she is 3lbs 14 oz but we expect weight gain. I dont know any preemie moms so I dont know what to expect or how long she will be in NICU

Re: Checking in
Sounds like she's doing great! She will get the hang of the suck/swallow/breathe. It's a difficult skill, even for full term babies. My dd was born at 38 weeks and needed help with that, too. Hang in there, sounds like you're doing great!

Re: Checking in
OMG!! Congratulations!! I must have missed the post that said you had your daughter!
I was a NICU mom and from what you have said it sounds like she is doing really well. I'm sure you have heard a million times already that the NICU is a "roller coaster ride" (a term you will come to hate!). It is true though, you may have good days and not so good days. Just stay as positive and hopeful as you can... and don't be afraid to ask questions!!! The NICU can be overwhelming... just stay focused on your little girl and you'll be ok!
No one will be able to tell you exactly how long she will have to stay. The "standard" answer is that they usually stay until their actual due date but if she is doing better then she may come home earlier.
Good luck to all of you!!!
PS... FM me if you have any NICU questions... I don't know if I'll have the answers... but I'd love to help if I can!

Re: Checking in
I'm glad to here baby Taylor is doing well!
Here was my experience: DD was born at just 33 weeks...she was born at 4lbs 2oz. She lost after she was born and I think the lowest she got to was 3lbs 8oz. Within the first week, she was breathing on her own and they let her try some formula in a bottle. The first feeding they gave her was 5cc's and she sucked it down and the NICU nurse said she was trying to lick the inside of the bottle.
DD was in the NICU for a total of 2 weeks. By the second week...she was eating regularly with a bottle, breathing on her own, etc. We were just waiting for her to gain weight. DH and I were getting anxious to take her home, and we pressured the NICU to move her to a crib to see if she could maintain her temperature outside of the incubator. The first time...she failed, and they said her temp went down. 2 days later, we made them try again.
Once she was able to maintain her temp, eat her bottles without spitting the whole thing up, we asked them to let us take her home. I do not think they really thought she was ready to go home...but we were ready to have her home. She wasn't being stimulated enough at the NICU to burn any colories to want to eat more. They relunctantly agreed to let us take her home since she passed her carseat test and was maintaining her tempature. The NICU is a very good place, but they couldn't give us an answer as to when we could take her home...I had no patience to wait until her actual due date for another 5 weeks!
Exactly 2 weeks from the day she was born, she came home. She weighed 4lbs 2oz the day she was released from the hospital, so she regained all of her birth weight. She went to her first ped's visit 2 days after coming home and gained 7 ozs in those 2 days because at her first visit she weighed 4lbs 9 oz.
She has had absolutly no problems caused by being a preemie..and she still is on the small side, but has met many of the milestones.
If you have any questions, please feel free to FM me
PS. If you do a search for my name around September of 2006, you will see all my updates on the pregnancy/parenting boards.

Re: Checking in
Congratulations on the birth of your DC! It sounds as if things are going well, and I hope she gets the help she needs. I'm sure she will be fine.
I haven't had any children yet, so I can't offer any advice, but hang in there, and as people have said, ask lots of ?s if you are concerned.

Re: Checking in
So happy to hear that baby is doing well. I am sure she will learn how to do all that fun breathing, sucking, swallowing.... it's hard, sometime I even have trouble with it!
My question for you is how are YOU doing? Now that you have had the baby, were you immediately able to start eating again? I am very curious about that. Again, you are amazing and I am so happy to hear that you and baby are doing well!

First a big thanks to all you wonderful ladies.
I am hanging in there food wise. I am on a soft diet so my digestion is still poor. My GI doctors are giving me a few days before they do any kind of true evaluation so as for now I am able to eat eggs, some sandwiches and soup which is ALOT. Harder or more solid meals still dont digest but its only been 4 days so I am hopeful. The good news is that I am producing breast milk and that was a concern for me.

Making progress, that is great! You must be so excited to start eating solid food of any kind at this point! Here's a fun question, once your digestion gets back on track, what is the one food that you are just so excited to eat again?

Re: Checking in
This sounds great!!! I remember my niece and nephew in NICU and I remember that progress took a long time. Taylor's progress sounds good and quick!!!!
How are you feeling Annissa, physically? How are the foods going down? Are they able to change course of action for you to get better?
