CHECKBOOK HELP

Usually being OCD about bills works in my favor but now i have just confused myself beyond belief!

I get paid the 1st and the 16th.Dh gets paid every two weeks on thursdays.

I put one whole check of mine away in to savings. 1 check of his is for spending then our two checks are for bills and whatver is left( usually NOTHING) goes to savings.

But some of our billss are due the 1st like rent and the sitter and some are due the 20th like cable, car, cells.

Usually i end up transfering money for savings for builss then instead of putting teh checks in checking iput it back into savings to replenish what i borrowed for bills.
How do you manage your bills and money and what checks for what?

Re: CHECKBOOK HELP

Why not have all your checks deposited into the account that you pay bills out of and then after your bills are paid, you can write a check for the balance and deposit it into your savings?

or if you are worried about spending the money that's left over, can you set up direct deposit so that only a certain $ gets put into your checking (a rounded up number to cover the costs of your bills) and then the rest can be directly deposited into your savings?

Re: CHECKBOOK HELP

What we do is we are ahead one month for bills. So the paychecks from say December 15th and 30th, pay the bills for January. Unless we go over budget we don't end up taking anything from the savings for the bills b/c we always have all the money for any given month.

Re: CHECKBOOK HELP

I agree with the above, see if you can get your check split up. So instead of putting one whole check in savings- have each of the 4 checks split up 75% checking, 25% savings. That way you'll always have money in checking to pay your bills.

Re: CHECKBOOK HELP

i am pretty OCD about my finances and here's what i do. i set up a budget each month, at the beginning of the month based on what bills are due and birthdays, holidays, etc. each friday when we get paid (direct deposit), i pay the bills that are due and move the rest into savings, leaving behind whatever we need for the week. our savings and checking are linked so it's easy to move $ if there's any emergency. putting a portion into savings each week is much easier for us than putting a whole paycheck at a time.

Re: CHECKBOOK HELP

I have the savings portion of the paychecks automatically desposited into the various savings and investments accounts. From checking our housing and car payments and IRAs are also withdrawn automatically. What is left is left to save and spend (we try and save some money in checking as well as in the other accounts.)

Re: CHECKBOOK HELP

We have a set amount automatically transferred into our savings each week. However, around the 1st of every month we have two big bills that are due, so we sometimes have to borrow from our savings and then put it back.

I tried to think of another way to do it so I don't have to keep borrowing from savings, but this just seems like the best way for now.

We are saving a lot in order to buy a house, so once we can lower the amount that we transfer into savings, we should be ok.
