"She started talking and reading when she was just 8 months old. She had elementary school finished at age 5."
I don't know how I'd react if all of a sudden one day my 8 MONTH OLD BABY began reading and talking to me. lol

I worked with the student, and unfortunately I think it was her mother who made all her decisions for her, and she may later regret never having had a childhood.

See, I was wondering just that. What has this KID done for fun. What kind of childhood has she had?
I understand that with children this smart, it's probably different, but still, has she ever have a chance to just be a kid?

I was thinking the same.
I teach high school AP and college level classes but if this happened with my 8 month old, I'd be honestly, scared.
I always feel for kids like this, they really can't have *normal* relationships with their peer groups. Socially and emotionally they often suffer tremendously. I've seen it happen with a couple of students over the years who were bright well their years.
ETA: Just saw the comment about the mom's involvement. Then it makes it even more tragic and sad that she pushed her so much. She should have tried to provide a balance, espcially with social activities.

I agree with this. I always think about how lonely kids like this must be.

No, she started out in the Northport district and her mother kept pushing to get her into higher grades and classes. The mother then attempted to sue the district (honestly not sure of the outcome) for not adequately providing her her needs.
The mother then sued to have her matriculated into the college, because she at that time lacked a GED or high school diploma, which is required for SUNY admission.

No, she started out in the Northport district and her mother kept pushing to get her into higher grades and classes. The mother then attempted to sue the district (honestly not sure of the outcome) for not adequately providing her her needs. She was taking one or two college classes a semester at Stony Brook, as many high school students do, when her mother sued to state to matriculate her (it is not legal to enroll in a SUNY without a hs diploma or GED, and she at that point had neither).
The mother attended ALL her college, master's, AND doctoral classes along with her, and also took notes. There was quite a concern that the mother actually wrote her college papers for her (she was very gifted in the math/science courses, but not as strong in the writing courses).
i don't doubt that this is all true, but she seems happy, and appears to feel that she is doing a lot of people good - i think that's what is important.

I don't know that anyone can judge whether she is truly happy, and even if she is happy right now, i'd love to hear her opinions at 40 when she never went to a prom or school dance, or even had to opportunity to go to the mall or movies with friends as a teen. I do know that she was an extremely introverted, socially awkward teenager. Granted, those types also exist in regular high schools , but I do think there is something to be said for being able to socialize with people your own age at that stage in life.
I've worked with extremely gifted students, but I think most parents who are educators would not choose this route for their child, no matter how gifted he or she may be.

I think in a case like this, however, the child will be bored in class. She's a prodigy and normal scenarios don't apply to people like that. Rather than giving them a normal life and add enrichment to their schooling, they need to live an exceptional school life and have socialization added. But remember, a 4 year old prodigy will not be able to normally socialize with a regular 4 year old.
As a side, she's a local Wonder what elementary school she went to.

I disagree that because she is a prodigy she wouldn't be able to normally socialize with people her own age, especially during the teen years. She's hitting puberty and possibly starting to look at boys her own age, and she's got no one her own age to relate to. There are colleges specifically designed for gifted students who start college at an early age, but instead of going that route, she went to a traditional college where she was, to most of the campus, a pariah, and someone to point at.
Is she brilliant? In several subjects, yes, but I think her achievements speak more to the pushy mother who raised her than her innate abilities.

I'm surprised she didn't attend a school like the "Long Island School for the Gifted" or did she?
ETA: I'm sure a school like that could have stimulated her acedemically but all the while she would be able to socialize with peers her age and in the same boat acedemically.

That's what I was going to say. It sounds like she didn't from what Beth posted, but I would think that would be a good option, instead of being a 5 year old 6 th grader.

No, the mother did not want to pay tuition, and actually sued Northport school district to pay her college tuition, because she felt that they couldn't accomodate her special needs so they should pay for her tuition and books in college. But yes, that would have been a much better route for her socially.

Wow that's a shame. That woman didn't do her kid any favors by pushing her through the system.
If she would have just put her daughter in LISG I think she would have been better off. I knew three different kids who attended that school and it was the best thing for them. Socally, they were "normal" kids, acedemically they were "normal" too b/c every other kid there was just as smart.
Not to mention, they could have customized a cirriculum for her that would have challenged her in the math/sciences but would still address her english skills. I'm sure she was still above average but they could have tailored it to meet all her needs and like someone else said, she wouldn't have been a 5 yr old 6th grader.
What a shame.

That's exactly my point! I see the story all over, and I don't think "how great!" I think "how sad that she never had a childhood."

Re: Check out the smart local gals we have!!!
I have to say I think that child was beyond even LISG. Most of the kids there were not reading at 8 months and wouldn't have been able to graduate from college at 14... Not that the children aren't brilliant and that it isn't a wonderful school, but I think genius like this girl's comes around extremely infrequently.
That does NOT mean that I agree that she should have been pushed through college at such a young age, etc., etc. While I am amazed at the level of intellect, I always worry about the social skills of a person that brilliant. Even beyond not having a "normal" childhood, I wonder if they have a difficult time relating to more average people... Random things I think about...
I am amazed by her brilliance, though!
