Check Engine light came on last night
I hit a bump- and the check engine light came on
I was on the phone with my Dad- he said it's most likely nothing
but they can't take my car until thursday
I also need an inspection so at least I get a loaner car for that
but if the light starts flashing- then I need to pull over and get it towed in
of course all this happens less then 1 week after I decide I want to buy it 
if it's major I am going to need to rethink that plan....

Sometimes they have those lights set to go off automatically at certain mileages so that you bring the car in for maintainence. It's annoying as heck but it's probably nothing major...

Did you put gas in it yesterday?
This happens to me sometimes if the gas cap wasn't put on tight and air gets in the tank. It just has to be reset.
Hopefully that's all it is for you too

You are absolutley right. My check engine light goes on all the time and I ignore it for days or even weeks and then it goes off and so on! I would not worry about it!

I have had problems in the past with the sensor that controls the check engine light. I learned the hard way (after the mechanic checked the whole system that the light indicated and nothing was wrong with it) to have them check the sensor first.
Make sure you have oil and transmission fluid in the car and you should be fine until you can get the car in on Thursday.

see that's what's odd- I have other warning lights that have come on in the past- but they come in thru the message center
like a big red check oil light
this time- just the check engine light- no other warning
I checked the gas cap- it was loose
my BF seems to think it will turn off in a day or 2
but I would feel better getting it checked out anyway

The check engine light coming on could mean numerous things, most of which are nothing! Sometimes, it's just a matter of a technician resetting the fuse. Could be an emissions problem. Could be anything! I wouldn't worry!

ok- that makes me feel better
my Dad said the same thing about emissions
I hope it's an easy fix- or they at least fix it for free
it's a lease- but the warrenty is up- I was waiting till I bought it to buy the extended warrenty- or see if they would throw that in - but that's not for another month

If you want, you can pull into AutoZone and the staff there will check it for FREE! A VW dealer charged me once when he checked an "idiot" light for me. There was nothing wrong and they reset it and CHARGED ME. I think it was $180. That number sounds impossible but really, I think that it was it was in the end! I almost died
Now, I run into AutoZone and have them check it. Just thought I would let you know. Good Luck!

If it is after you hit a bump it may be a spark plug that became a little loose. This has happened to us before. Unless it starts flashing I think you will be fine to wait until thursday.
