central vacuum

Does anyone have central vac in their home? We are most likely going to have it installed during our house renovation but I want to hear pros/cons. Thanks!

Re: central vacuum

We have it and it's just ok I would say. We have issue with the hose not being long enough in a few areas. We also have had our hose break twice now (got a replacement then that broke too).

We find it's best for quick clean-ups but for heavy cleaning we get out the real vacuum. Also, we don't have much carpet- just a runner on the stairs then area rugs. Only the finished basement is fully carpeted.

DH's opinion on them is that he would put one in as a selling feature but not so much because he likes them. We've had them both at our prior residence and current home.

I have one, it was in my house when I purchased it 17 years ago. All in all, I like it, but I don't really have any carpet in my house. In 17 years, I've only had to replace one unit, about 10 years in. I've used Vacu Flow in Kings Park for service and have been happy with them.

I have it but never use it because its a PITA to keep going into the basement to empty the canister. My DH on the other hand thinks its the greatest thing since sliced bread! He has a "thing" for owning gadgets he never uses.

Re: central vacuum

Ive had it all my life in all the homes my parents have built, and now in the home we just bought. The suction sucks, the hoses and carpet attachment has always broken, and it just a PITA overall. It's great for high ceiling and vacuuming the walls and cobwebs, that's about it.
