Central Air Question

For those of you that never had it and then got it installed in your house, did they have to break through the walls to do all the vents/duct work?

We have central air but it is terrible. When we moved into our house in 2007 the central air went within a few weeks of moving in. We thought it was just the compressor unit and purchased a new one with a huge price tag. It seems like the duct work is so old so there is like no air/heat reaching the bedrooms on the second floor of our house. I think we might need new windows too, but that is a totally different subject.

My husband said he can have someone come and work on the old ducts and it would cost $1000. I think that is a lot since it is not guaranteed. I told my husband we should find out about getting all new vents/duct work, but he says they will have to break walls, etc.

I just feel like going this route is not the best, the ducts are the old aluminum ones.

Has anyone had any experience with any of this?

Thanks in advance

Re: Central Air Question

I know sometimes junk can accumulate in the ductwork, and you may have to have it cleaned out... that may be a cheaper option to test out before tearing out all the ducts Chat Icon

If I were in your situation, I would probably get a few pro's to assess the situation before making a decision... I bet they WOULD disrupt your walls while replacing ducts... Chat Icon

I agree - try the route with getting the ducts cleaned.

Secondly, get the free estimates from companies on what the correct thing would be.

We're currently going through our installation right now for CAC. However, they did not need to go through all the walls, just one. Our vents upstairs are in the ceilings and the vents on the main floor are coming through the floor.

If you already have the duct work and the vents in place, it shouldn't be that expensive.

FM with any questions or if you want any recommendations.

I think they snake the new duct work up through the walls by going in through the closets in the house. The new duct work is flexible, like an accordion.

MY BIL had CAC put in one week and had a party the next weekend and no one could tell that they disturbed anything! HTH!

It all depends on what the homeowner wants. We're having CAC installed now and they have not used any of our closets. They came up from the basement and placed vents on the floor.

We had central air installed in our house 3 years ago. Since we already had heating ductwork running throughout the house, we did not need to install separate ductwork - both the AC and heat come through the same. Runs beautifully!
