Cat allergies and a new house question

Cat allergies and a new house question

We are looking at a co-op in which a cat currently resides. DH is somewhat allergic to cats, not deathly, but he gets very stuffy and sneezy in homes with cats.

If we ended up purchasing the place, do you think we will be able to get rid of all the cat hair and dander? We plan to take out all the carpeting, paint the walls, and have a professional cleaning service come in too.

From what I understand, it is very difficulty to remove hair and dander so I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this. I would die if we bought a place cleaned it out totally, just to have DH miserable in it.

Re: Cat allergies and a new house question

My DH has pretty bad cat allergies. We moved into a house that 4 cats lived in. The floors were poly hardwoods. There was no carpeting. He doesn't have any issues at all living in the home. I would say if you remove all carpeting, finish the floors and paint, also vacumn the radiators good, he should be ok but I can't say 100% for sure.

What were your plans with the floors after the carpet is removed?

Carpets, drapes and fabrics are key.

Did your husband have a reaction when he visited? My dh is only a little allergic, so strange. We have a cat who sleeps with us and no problem. But he suffers at homes with 2 cats and carpeting (my parents)

So I think the precautions should make it ok, depends on how sensitive he is.

You can buy a hepa filter for like 100 bucks if needed and run for a few days.

I wouldn't not buy a home because of this, unless his allergy was ultra-severe. It's not like toxic waste, you can get rid of dander especially if you remove carpets as indicated

I am super allergic to cats and we just bought a co-op last year where the previous owners had 3 cats. We tore up and replaced all the carpets, repainted and wiped down everything with disinfectant. All has been good so far, I haven't had any issues. Obviously I had to take allergy meds while all of this was being done but I'm fine now.
