carseat arrangment when you have a newborn and toddler
my 2.5 yr old is currently in the middle facing forward. when baby#2 comes - she goes in the middle, and where is the second safest place for the toddler? behind me or behind the passenger?
Also - I'm wondering.... how do you get into the car with toddler and newborn? do you first put your newborn in or toddler? i think about the weirdest things lol.

Re: carseat arrangment when you have a newborn and toddler
Right now, DD (27 mos) is behind the passenger seat. When this baby arrives in a few months I was just planning on putting them behind the drivers seat. I am not planning to switch anything around (not sure if I"m supposed to).
As far as getting them in, well that's easy. My toddler will go in first since I the newborn will be contained in their carseat . I don't trust my 2 year old to wait while I get the baby in, kwim?

Re: carseat arrangment when you have a newborn and toddler
DS is rear facing in the middle right now. When the baby comes, he will be rear (or forward since he'll be 26 months) facing behind the driver. Baby will be behind the passenger.
My understanding is that two carseats can't be touching each other when installed (need to confirm this!). We have a Britax Boulevard for DS and will reuse his Chicco Keyfit 30 for DD when she comes. They're both big seats and are almost bunched together when installed side by side.
If it's ok to install them and have them touch, then I'd prefer to leave DS in the middle since we could still have a passenger sit behind the driver. If we have to separate the seats, we can never give someone else a lift because it leaves too tiny of a space in the middle (since the seats get installed centered in their respective spots).

Re: carseat arrangment when you have a newborn and toddler
We are having twins and are upgrading to a minivan (gasp!). I figured DS, who will be 26 months when the babies arrive, will go in the captian chair behind the passenger seat. The other captian chair will be stowed, so I have easy access to the back row. I will put the 2 infant car seats in the back row.
This will also allow me to jump back there from the front seat easily if I need to.
It's going to be interesting!!

DS#1 is behind the passenger's side. Our infant car seat for DS#2 is going in the center as well.

DS#1 behind driver and DS#2 behind passenger. I usally put my older one in the seat first since he was more mobile and the baby was in the infant carrier and couldn't go anywhere.

Re: carseat arrangment when you have a newborn and toddler
When we had #2 we had DS1 behind the driver and DS2 behind the passenger. Mine are only 23 months apart and the car seat tech said if you don't have to have them right next to each other he wouldn't as my older son would have been able to reach the baby.

Re: carseat arrangment when you have a newborn and toddler
My toddler is behind the driver and my baby is behind the passenger. Usually if we are in a parking lot, I get the snap and go out first, put the baby in it, wheel him around to DDs side and unsnap her while holding the stroller with one hand, then she jumps down.

Re: carseat arrangment when you have a newborn and toddler
I plan on putting the infant behind the passenger and the toddler behind the driver. I am hoping to move DS next month to get used to the transition before the baby comes (he's not good with change).
I will put the baby in the car first - I will strap him/her in the carseat in the house first and snap it into the base and put DS in second - he usually walks himself out to the car.

Re: carseat arrangment when you have a newborn and toddler
Our ped said although center is safest, it is better to separate them so your toddler does not try n share food and toys with the baby or pull/hit them. So we did forward facing behind driver and infant behind passenger.
Eta if u are the driver it's easier to stick a pacifier into the baby's mouth if they r behind passenger seat- like at a red light etc.
