Carrier for Cystic Fibrosis
I just got a call today from my doctor's office telling me that my blood test results came back positive as a carrier for cystic fibrosis. I am so sad. DH is going to get tested tomorrow, but his test results wont be in for a week. We are supposed to have friends over for new years, but now I dont think I am up for it.

Re: Carrier for Cystic Fibrosis
sending you some
I was a carrier for a fatal genetic disease and DH turned out not to be. Hopefully the same will be true for you with CF!

Re: Carrier for Cystic Fibrosis
Try not to worry about it!!! I think you both need to be carriers and then it is still only a chance. I definitely could be wrong though. Did you ask you Dr?

Re: Carrier for Cystic Fibrosis
DH has to be a carrier with the same genetic mutation. And then if he is, there is a 1:4 chance the baby will have it. I do not do well with unknowns. This is going to be one looonngg week. DH cant go until tomorrow to get the blood drawn. He still wants to have people over for new years eve, but I just dont think I am up to it. He is so optimistic, but I cant help but not be.

Re: Carrier for Cystic Fibrosis
My cousin is a carrier and so is her husband. They had a 1 in 4 chance of having a baby with CB. Thankfully, the baby doesn't have it. So, even if your husband is a carrier, you still have a very, very good chance of having a healthy baby.

That is great to hear. This gives me some hope. Did she have an amnio?

I know the waiting stinks, but hopefully DH isn't a carrier.
And I say have people over. It may help take your mind off things, even if its just for a couple of hours.

This is exactly what DH thinks, but I dont know. I dont have the motivation to "entertain" and make food, etc. And then deal with drunks because I am sure the guys will drink plenty...

I am a carrier as well, and this is what I was told...has to be the exact same mutation. Luckily, my husband was fine. They should really just run the husbands blood work at the same time as the wifes...that would be great!

I'm sorry you are going through this. I hope everything is ok and that your Dh is not a carrier. Try to be postive but I know that's easier said than done.

Re: Carrier for Cystic Fibrosis
I was also a carrier for cystic fibrosis!! when i got the call i was soo confused cuz i honestly didnt even know what CF was!! of course once i found out and bugged out. DH took his test on the day of our ultrasound, and my doctor made me feel a lot better...
she said i really shouldnt freak out unless we have really bad luck! the chances of both of us being a carrier was like 1 in 500!! got the results a week later and turned out DH was not a carrier!! was def a relief!!
also when i first heard about me being a carried the nurse who i talked to said if dh was a carrier as well there would be a 50/50 shot that the baby would have it...but as i did research its actually only a 25% chance your baby would be affected!!
soo i know its hard, because ive been in your shoes, but try and stay positive!!! it will work out! stress is no good for the baby!!!

They really should. It would eliminate a lot of heartache over hopefully nothing. DH is so positive about it. I couldnt sleep last night, I kept waking up and the first thing that comes to my mind is CF. The internet is the worst thing at times like these...

Ugh. I didnt really know either. My husband says the same thing about stress. And I know that's true, but the baby has dealt with plenty of stress already - I have a very stressful job. I know that's a bad excuse. I wish there were some way to get DH's results sooner.

Re: Carrier for Cystic Fibrosis
I tested positive for a carrier of SMA. I feel your pain because it was one of the worst feeling ever. The week that it took for DH's bloodwork to come back felt like forever. Thankfully DH is NOT a carrier so it wasn't an issue we needed to worry about.
These stories are pretty common and I'm sure everything will work out just fine. Good Luck

Re: Carrier for Cystic Fibrosis
i was a carrier for CF as well... it is SUCH a small chance that your DH will come up positive as a carrier... by OB said that like 5% of the world is a carrier for CF
we just happen to be in that 5% he said he was floored when i came up positive b/c thats how often it happens

Re: Carrier for Cystic Fibrosis
I believe either my SIL or brother was a carrier and when my nephew was born, he did not pass the test they do. A few weeks later, they checked again and he is absolutely fine. They didn't tell anyone besides our parents and I can't imagine how worried they must have been however, my nephew is perfectly healthy. Try not to worry too much.
