CARES infant harness for airline travel?

Has anyone used the CARES infant harness for airline travel?

Is this something worth investing in? It's sells for about $75.

I'm trying to decide if it's better to use this type of restraint or take the convertible car seat on the plane. My DS will be at least 1 yr old, possibly 1.5 yrs old when we fly.

We need the convertible car seat to get to and from the airport. But I don't know if it's better to check it or bring it in the cabin with us.

Here's a pic of the harness from their website.

If you need a seat at your destination anyways, pick up a Cosco Scenera and use that on the plane. They're super light and about 40-45 dollars. Or you can invest in a Go Go Kidz which is also less than $100 and bring your regular convertible carseat and use the carseat on the plane.

I have friends that use the CARES harness but only when they have seats at their destination to use and they really like them.

I wouldn't recommend gate checking your seat, baggage handlers are known to throw them and drop them and I've heard many stories of people's seats being cracked when they get them back, rendering them useless and having to try to get a seat at their destination.

I have this one you can have for free... new in box! It was given to me from another LIF mommy and I never ended up using it. I have to check the size on it though.

Really? I've learned never to turn down free baby stuff! It always comes in handy. Thanks so much!

DS is already over 25 lbs at 8 mos old, so let me know if he'll even fit in the toddler harness.

I have to check out seat for the baby when we go to NY

is it better to check it with the luggage then?

Well I am bringing one for my DD but she is almost 3. I would say for a 1-1.5 year old I would use the car seat since you say you already need it for your trip. I used the car seat with DD when she was 15 months and it worked out great - she was comfortable and kept her in her seat. I'm bringing our car seat for my DD#2 for this trip - she is only about 20 lbs maybe 21 lbs so she isn't big enough to use it this time (they need to be 22 lbs minimum).

I would definitely gate check it - they regularly throw the baggage that is checked with the luggage - there is no guarantee that they won't throw a gate checked one but generally they are slightly more careful with gate checked items than with the general luggage.

That item is only for in lap - not to put them in a seat - it is meant to strap them to you for safety in the air (you can't use those on take off or landing though.) If you are getting your DC an actual seat you will need either the car seat or the CARES system.

Oh that's good to know. I don't think my DS will sit in our laps for that long, which is one of the reasons we will have to buy him his own seat.

My sister recommended the Go Go Kidz too. That's an option.

We'll try to gate check his stroller if we do this.

This is what you were talking about right?

Re: CARES infant harness for airline travel?

We fly A LOT - my DD has been on 15 round trip flights and isn't even 2 yet. We used to bring the infant seat on the plane and gate check the stroller. Once she moved up to the convertible seat, we bought a bag for it and check it at the front counter when we check our luggage: Link to bag on Amazon

We either hold her on our lap or let her sit in the empty seat next to us (we typically fly SW and almost always end up with an empty seat). Once she turns 2 we'll have to start buying her a seat and may buy one of those harnesses.

If you don't travel often and he is less than 2, I don't think its necessary.
