car seats and tall babies... safety question

DS is nearing 1year, he's at least 33" tall, probably more. And at least 24lbs.

Getting him in the seat, rear facing, is a bit of a physical challenge for us, but he seems fine in there. So I would like to keep him rear facing as long as possible.

What concerns me is that shoulder straps start from the middle of his back, and probably lower than the middle of his back. Not sure, can this be safe?

Its the MyRide 65, the straps are on the highest position that is allowed rear facing. the next slat is for front facing... according to the manual.

WDYT?

I would check the manual for your convertible seat.

I believe the rule is that when they are rear facing, the strap should come out right AT their shoulder line or upto an inch BELOW their shoulder line.

If they are front facing, then the strap should be above the shoulder line.

Right now DS is still in his infant seat, obvioulsy rear facing since that's the only way it goes. The strap is probably more than an inch below his shoulder line, but when I move it up to the next slot, it's above his shoulder line, so I'm just waiting until it reaches his shoulder line to move it to that slot.

Yeah, the manual says it can be below the shoulder line rear facing and doesn't say how much farther below. But I think the picture shows it almost to the middle of the back.

The manual says the next slot up, is for front facing only.

does your manual have a height restriction- we have the keyfit 30 and it says 30 pounds or 30 inches whichever comes first

She's using a convertible. But this is a good point. I know the maximum weight now is around 40 lbs for a lot of seats in the rear facing position, but double check what your convertible seat's limits are.

Re: car seats and tall babies... safety question

It is 1" of plastic shell above the head per Graco's manual. This is the standard for all RF'ing convertible seats as stated height limits are a guide. If your child is quite leggy they may reach a specific height but still have plenty of room in the seat, whereas a child who has a long torso may outgrow the seat by height before meeting a certain height.

Weight limits are absolute, however.

First question, have you taken out the infant body support insert? Only the bottom 2 slots can be used with the insert and the insert isn't necessary once they fit in the seat without it (pretty much for itty bitty babies)

The bottom 4 slots can be used RF. Only the top slot can not be used. If you need the top slot RF then your child's head would be even with or extend above the shell.

At 33" I doubt your child has outgrown this seat RF'ing. DD1 is 34" and has long torso and just moved to the 3rd slots, with one more to go.

Do you have a pic of your DC in the seat?

Chat Icon my kid is long everywhere. His feet don't really touch the back seat of the car yet, so maybe his torso is actually the long part.

yep!

DS is on the 4th slot now. I honestly don't know exactly how tall he is now, he was 33" at his 9m appointment, and he's 11m now.

I'll get this tomorrow. Thanks for all your insight!

Anyone else have any suggestions? Anyone have the MyRide 65 carseat?

My suggestion is to have the child and the seat looked at. Nassau County Traffic Safety can help inspect the seat and the child and help you with this.

Call 571-9664 - ask for Chris.

If you cannot come for a fitting - call anyway and you can be given direction over the phone.
