Car seat installation?
Did you or DH install your carseat yourselves or did you go to a fire house, etc to have someone install it for you? Also, I've gotten mixed responses about where to put carseat- is it rearfacing in the middle or behind the passenger seat? Thanks

Car seat installation?
Middle is always best / safest at any point. I kept DS in the middle until I moved him to the convertible car seat. As the baby gets heavier, it definitely gets harder to lift the seat/baby into the middle. Once he was in the convertible, he was behind the passenger seat (rear facing until age 2)
I highly recommend having a professional install the seat at least once so you see how to do it properly. Not all firehouses have a person who is trained in this. I did it through North Shore Hospital. They hold events on weekends at Cohen's or NS Plainview. You have to register for it but it's completely free. They'll also do multiple cars.

Re: Car seat installation?
90% of people do it incorrectly- I would definitely go get it done by a professional- they will show you how to do it properly too so you know for the future

Re: Car seat installation?
Town of Hempstead has a car seat installation program. TOH Car Seat Install link
Call and make an apptmt. Most people install incorrectly in the beginning. They really explain it well and now DH is a pro at installing our seat. But, DS is at the latch weight limit so I made an apptmt for them to reinstall it w/ belts and install our infant seat since DS2 is coming. Well worth it and they have dates at various locations.

Re: Car seat installation?
Anybody know of places that do this in Queens? OR should I stop by the local fire station?

I installed it myself but had the Town of Brookhaven's safety program check it again last week.

Re: Car seat installation?
We went to an infant CPR class where they said 75% of seats are installed incorrectly (similar stat to what others mentioned). We will be having it installed by some official place (forget the name) on Friday. FM if you want the info, they go by appt.

Re: Car seat installation?
Read your car manual to find out where to install your carseat. Every car is different. Most of the time you will install it using the LATCH system, but many cars don't have that in the middle.
We installed the car seat ourselves. It was really easy, actually. It has a dial on it to show if it's installed level or not, and it's in so tight that sucker isn't going anywhere.

Oh and we did our own. Not hard if you follow the directions.

Car seat installation?
Hassel auto body in Babylon I think. Kim or Doug are both great and friendly. You don't need an appointment just call ahead to make sure they are there and available to do it. They won't take money, they tell you to put it towards your child's college fund.

Perhaps that's true.... however the people who installed my car seat (both the infant base and the convertible) said that it was the safest location. Perhaps that was the advice they were giving based on my car...They were actually annoyed that I wasn't installing my convertible in the middle. I was like, you try lifting a 27 lb kid who doesn't want to sit in the seat half the time. Hence the move to the passenger side with the convertible.

Car seat installation?
Also as an FYI -- for convertible car seats -- the LATCH system is not tested to secure a child who is 40 lbs or more whereas a seat belt is tested to secure 1000s of pounds. Be sure to make the switch around that time (weight) if you are using LATCH.
Most people won't have to worry about that though until their kid is over 3 years old.

Re: Car seat installation?
We went to Hassel, they were great. She told us we could do middle or passenger side... that either was good. we did passenger side cause I can't imagine how I would have gotten him in or out all the way in the middle. We also needed access to the 3rd row and would not have had it if he was in the middle.
Honestly, everyone got me so worried about getting it installed... it is super easy and the 90% of people who do it wrong must be pretty dumb! LOL
Just make sure its level and can't sway more than an inch in either direction.

Re: Car seat installation?
We got ours installed by State police in Farmingdale. They said most of the people installing it incorrectly aren't getting it snug enough, so he showed us how tightly it should be in place. I definitely recommend getting it checked/installed by a professional the first time.
As time went on we needed to uninstall and reinstall it on our own for various reasons, so I'm glad we had the trooper show us the right way the first time.

i actually followed the directons for the infant seat and i still didnt have it in right. First it wasnt tight enough (totally my fault and i knew it wasnt) But second she baiscally said for my car the directions arent correct and it should really do it the way she showed me.
so i always recommend getting your seat check by a professional.

we went to hassle also and like i just stated i read the directions besides the fact that i didnt tighten it enough which i knew i didnt i still followed the directions and basically was told the directions were basically wrong so i wouldnt say 90% of people are dumb i would say the directions given are dumb.
After i saw how it should be done i now have no issue installing it.
