Car Seat Inspection Spin-Off
The other post just added another thing to my burdened mind.
Excuse the first timer here but I have a few questions:
1. Is car seat inspection mandatory? Is it a law or is it just a good, safe thing to do?
2. Who can do car seat inspections? How do you find someone?
3. What if you have to transfer the seat to another car, would you have to inspect it again?
Ok, I think I have time before I have to really worry about this one but this was the first i really heard about this.

Car Seat Inspection Spin-Off
1. it's not mandatory but highly recommended 2. i know there is a site for ny carseat inspection places. i've seen it before but don't have it handy right now 3. the car seat base installation should be inspected per car - once the car seat itself is snapped in, it should be safe. If you have a convertible seat (not an infant seat that you can pull in and out) then every time you switch the seat to a new car, you should get it inspected.

I believe you can't take the baby home unless your car seat has been inspected. When the car seat is inspected you obtain a sticker to show the hospital upon departure.

When I was at Winthrop, they barely checked to make sure we had a car seat. I had my seat installed and inspected, and never got a sticker.
For me, it was just a smart, safe thing to do. I went to Hassell Auto Body in West Babylon and they were great. No appt necessary and it was a free service. It took 15 minutes, and I knew my baby would be safe in her seat. They also gave me some great safety tips: nothing in or around the car seat that didn't come with it (ie: no Bundle Me's, seat protectors, mirrors, etc). Totally worth it.

Car Seat Inspection Spin-Off
I never got a sticker for having the car seat inspected. I went for both my infant car seat and then the convertible, to learn how to do it and learned some rules.
All we had to show the hospital was that we had a car seat, and they made sure the baby was properly secured in the seat itself before we left (while in the room at the hospital, not actually into the car).
We have a convertible car seat that has an angle indicator built in. We have removed and replaced the car seat several dozen times (every time DD spills something -- meaning drinks or a diaper -- in it, I have to take the seat out to wash the whole cover) and only had it inspected that first time. DH is practically a pro at it now. I definitely feel it's installed properly without having it inspected every time. Additionally, when we traveled to Boston (flying) with DD when she was 8 m/o, we brought the infant car seat and the snap n go and the base, and we installed the base into a rental car and snapped the car seat into it without having it inspected. I highly recommend bringing someone who doesn't have mommy brain with you when you get it inspected and get instruction on installation so they'll be able to properly do it in the future. (Also, to learn how to install the infant seat without the base, since that comes up sometimes.) I don't think an inspection every time is necessary at all.

You just have to have a seat.....No an inspection is not mandatory.
I have installed bases in 3 cars and just installed a Convertible seat. None have been inspected. We followed the directions and the seat is not going anywhere....its in there.
DO what you are comfortable with.

This.... Please learn how to install your seat and feel comfortable doing it.. You never know when you are going to have to know how to do it, and get stuck.

Re: Car Seat Inspection Spin-Off
its not mandatory, but when I got mine inspected, I found out that the base was not installed tightly enough, and we were sure it was... so I guess it can't hurt.
That said, once we learned how to do it, we have travelled and have done it ourselves without inspection. But I found getting the inspection done was helpful and educational, especially when its time for the big convertible car seats.

It's not mandatory and we opted out of doing it with DC#1. And he's in car seat #3 now and I can't imagine going to get it checked every time we change seats or take it in and out of the car. Personally I feel the seats are very easy to install but there's never anything wrong with having someone check if you feel more comfortable. I think you can check with the hospital you will be delivering at or your local FD.

This was not the case for us. I delivered DC#1 at Good Sam.
