Car Seat Dilema
The twins are 3.8 and are still in a 5 pt harness seat. However, there is very little give between for the straps and it is getting harder and harder to buckle the two straps into the piece between the legs. Both C & J are over 40 lbs, is it time to move to a different seat?

wow! I was just coming on this morning to see when everyone else moved out of that seat to a booster seat! I was wondering the same thing and if it is ok/common to do it with my DD - when she turns 4 in August!

I was almost ready to move DD into a booster... UNTIL this past week!
We went to FL for vacation and I brought just a booster for her, not the high-back. Poor kid could not fall asleep in a comfy position!
I am going to keep her in the highback, but use the regular car seatbelt.
This is how she fell asleep in the booster....

What seat are they in now?
While it's legal to go to a booster at 4/40lbs, it's not always advisable. 4/40 is the bare minimum. There are many factors involved, maturity being a big part of that. Some children are not mature enough to move to a booster until they are 5, some 6.
Maturity includes things like falling asleep in the car, not unbuckling the belt, not moving the shoulder strap behind them or under their arm, sitting still for the ride and not leaning to the sides or forward. If your child is NOT able to do these things he/she is not booster ready.
It also needs to fit properly
The 5-Step Test. (applies to booster and vehicle belt fit)
1. Does the child sit all the way back against the auto/booster seat?
2. Do the child's knees bend comfortably at the edge of the booster/auto seat?
3. Does the belt cross the shoulder between the neck and arm?
4. Is the lap belt as low as possible, touching the thighs? (the lap portion should NEVER rest against the child's abdomen)
5. Is the child mature enough to stay seated like this for the whole trip?

She doesn't appear to be ready for boostering. If she still falls asleep that often that you are considering the highback, then she is not mature enough to remain in position for the entire trip and should remain in a 5 point harness.
Boosters are pre crash positioners. They boost the child up so that the adult seat belt fits them properly. Unlike us though, their bones are still forming and being out of position for them is much more detrimental than being out of position for us.
She is so very out of position here, I shudder to think what the outcome would be in even a minor accident.

I do agree with you. We have removed the booster and went back to the high-back booster seat with 5-pt harness, PRONTO! I was not comfortable with her in this position for many reasons.
But, there was no way for me to know until I tried

I just recently put me 3 year old and almost 5 year old (both 40 lbs) in a graco nautilus 3-in one carseat. They both are in 5 point harness and can be until 65 lbs.

Knowing you put her back into the 5 pt harness literally just made my day. Corny, I know

Are you talking about the C.rotch strap? How is it too short? Is the problem that DC sitting on it? What seat? Some can be moved out.

Stacey do you have the Nautilus? If so thats the same one I have and I have the same problem with the ****** strap. DD is tall and getting heavy and I feel that ****** strap is too uncomfortable. Right now my car is out of commission so when we do go out we go in my Moms car and I use our back up the Cosco Scenara...she's much more comfortable in that car seat.
