Can you give the paci during CIO?
At the doctor yesterday it was suggested that DS doesn't need his nighttime feeding anymore. The doctor told us to try this. This is how it went.
Put him to bed awake- check
When he wakes up, change his wet diaper and give him some water to see if he's just thirsty-check
Put him back to bed-check
Let him cry for one minute and then go in and pat his back and kiss him- Check (except I gave the paci back).
Then he fell back to sleep. Each time he woke up, I gave him one minute to cry and then got up and patted him, kissed him and gave back the paci. Each time he went to sleep. This happened about 5 times. He never ate and never cried for more than one minute..
If he continued to cry I was to let him cry for 5 mintues.. then go in and pat and kiss him. Then 10 minutes, Then 15, then 20 ... and so on. But, we never got to this point because he fell asleep as soon as I gave him the first kiss and pat.. and paci. The doctor never mentioned the paci so I wansn't sure if it was okay to do this.
So, My Mom tells me that she thinks I did it wrong because the paci is just like food. I think she's wrong because a paci is a soothing device and I am teaching self soothing, right? He just isn't able to put it back into his mouth by himself, yet.
HELP! What's the right answer? I can't get in touch with the doctor until Monday.

Re: Can you give the paci during CIO?
I would give the paci back, I actually think it is the opposite of food
BUT I couldn't go in when doing CIO, my DS would freak the freak out, that is part of the reason we didn't do it successfully til 1 year old, after he could put the paci back himself

well since you're doing the ferber method, i think it's fine. If you were doing the extinction method... then no.
How old is he? can he get the pacifier himself? Once ds could do that, we put like 6 in his crib for him to find himself.

Am I doing the Ferber?? I don't even know.. Just what the doctor told me to do. He is 5 months. He can take it out... But, He can't put it back in yet. Hopefully soon.

Yes when you do the 'checks' that is the ferber method. When you don't go in at all, that's the extinction method.
We could only do the extinction method with jacen. Going in made him mad!

If DS is hungry he will spit the paci out. He almost knows it isn't what he wants. What if you wean him off of the night time feeding? Like decrease the amount each night.

Since you aren't really doing CIO, then giving the paci is fine. You are right- it is a way to soothe. Great job mommy!!

I agree.
Except for DD, when we put 6 pacis in her crib, she was obsessed with having them all and wouldn't go to sleep if she saw one that was out of her reach. So now she only gets one.

Tricia, just so you know, if you want to do true CIO (extinction) at that age, we were successful with Luca. we actually had to take his pacifier away and do CIO at the same time because he would wake up every time it fell out if his mouth.
it all depends on what you are comfortable with

We're going through the up 10 times a night when it falls out of DS's mouth; that's the only thing I would worry about with what you are doing...

same here-had to do it the same way for the same reasons-between 4-5 months. sorry, meant to say we did CIO w/o the paci between 4-5 months successfully.

Hmmm he has gone to sleep without in the past.. Last night I just gave it to him so he wouldn't cry and would go back to sleep. Here I was thinking.. My kid is a CIO superstar.. he only cries for one minute... but, maybe I am just creating more problems...

Re: Can you give the paci during CIO?
For both of my kids I took the paci away about a month before CIO. I do hope that it works for your child the way you are doing it, but it is not true "CIO" if you continue to give the paci. Certainly worth the attempt though, since it seems to be going well for you. No harm in trying.
The point of CIO is to teach your child to self-sooth. Self soothing is what enables them to fall asleep on their own, and to fall back asleep on their own when they awake after each sleep cycle. Giving the paci does not teach self-soothing...the paci is doing the soothing. Until they are old enough to find the paci and put it back in their mouth themselves, you could end up with your DC waking up everytime the paci falls out of their mouth and not being able to go back to sleep until you put it back in.
