Can you change a godparent?
Does anyone know if the catholic church lets you change a godparent after the baptism happens?
BIL is a real low life, and I have fought with DH about this way before the baptism. He said it would change him. It didn't. He finally agrees that he wishes we picked my other BIL.

I don't know. I would either call up the church where you had the baptism and ask if you can amend the baptismal cert. to reflect the new godfather's name? I'm sorry you're in this situation.

I did a quick google search and two sites came up saying a godparent can't be changed.
I think you should call the church you used for the baptism and see what they say. Maybe they can "bend the rules".

JMO ... why do you need to change it officially? Just ask the other person and consider them the Godparent. Let them just take over the role.

because i don't even feel that he deserves to have his name on the certificate. I never wanted this from the beginning. This should have been one battle I fought a little harder.

I had a dead beat for my godfather and my sister had a dead beat for a godmother (they two happend to be husband (plus my moms brother) and wife). We just didnt associate with them and in mine and my sisters eyes we just looked at our other godparent as our only godparent.
Sorry you have to deal with this.

My brother's godfather is my mom's dirtbag uncle, who we don't associate with.
So my brother basically just had a surrogate godfather all these years, a family friend who knows he is more like the "real" godfather.
I don't believe you can change the godfather.

My nephew's "official" godmother has been missing from his life since he was too young to even know her.
I have been his "unofficial" godmother for 14 years. While it stung a little (ok a lot) that I was passed over 14 years ago, we both know in our hearts of our special bond and that's what matters.
Besides the fact that it doesn't look like you can change it, consider how the second choice godparent will feel now too. Some may see that as being on the "B" list of a wedding when you don't have enough to make your minimum, you know?
A will should overtake all of this anyway so if this person happens to be the person who should take care of your child God forbid something happens, you should have a dialogue with them first. Then change your will.

yes you can!!!!!! I am proof!! My parents got divorced when I was little and my god father was out of the picture, so when my Mom remarried thy wrote the diocese a letter and 1 month later a new baptismal certificate arrived with my NEW godfather's name listed
P.S. this is with the Catholic church, not sure of others
